Its funny, really. To think that one person could just changed everything about you. To think that one person could shine all the light on the truth while they stay hidden in the shadows. To think that she was that person......

April 4th, 2016

Finally, winter is almost done rearing its ugly face. Winter has never been my favorite season. Especially since its been the season of remembering my little sister Hannah. The family is always trying to keep busy during winter, to keep their minds off of the fact that she isn't here anymore to spend Christmas with us. Dad has been busy with his mayor campaign. Mom is busy with God knows what at 3 in the morning. Jacob is busy with being the favorite kid getting perfect grades in college. And me, I'm just busy with trying not to get a black eye today at school. "Mr. Grayson? Care to share what you are wishfully thinking about in the middle of this important info?" I shake my head vigorously. Mrs. Tellium glares at me. "Then pay attention."

"Yes ma'am." I just slump into my chair while everyone looks at me and snickers. I just can't wait for this class to be over.

The bell rang and world history was over. Off to lunch. I grab an apple from the snack bar and pay for it. "Dude its 12 o'clock and you look like you just woke up." I hear my friend Justin behind me as I walk to sit under my favorite tree.

"I feel like I just woke up. I guess that's what world history can do to you." Justin laughs as we sit down on the grass. He sips his pepsi and tries to say something in the middle of a gulp.

"Dude I saw your dad on the news last night." I just roll my eyes.

"What do expect? He's running for mayor." Justin shrugs, agreeing with me.

"Next he'll be governor. Then, next thing you know, president." I laugh, taken back by his exaggeration.

"That's if he even wins the spot for mayor." I take out my drawing pad and start to trace the apple. Justin nudges me lightly.

"Come on dude. I know winter isn't the best time for you but at least try to put a smile on." I softly sigh. He's right. It's been three years since Hannah passed, i should be over it by now. I give him a weak but convincing smile. "That'a boy. Come on, lets go get a muffin." We both get up and start walking to the snack stand when Michael pushes between us, making Justin's pespi on my drawing pad. "Oh my god Landon I am so sorry." Justin runs to get napkins.

"What the hell Michael?!" Fury is spewing out of me. All my favorite drawings are in this drawing pad. Michael sarcastically pouts.

"Aww. Is your diary ruined?" Everyone at this point is looking our way.

"Why are you such an idiot?!"

"What did you just say?" Any other day I wouldn't dare to talk to Michael like this. But right now, he's pushed my limits.

"What are you deaf? I said you're an incompetent idiot!" Everyone gets into a crowd around us and starts laughing. At this, he punches me right in my left eye, sending me straight to the ground. The crowd 'oos' at the hit. I hold my eye in pain facing the ground. Michael turns me around and starts punching me continuously in the face. At this point I'm holding on to the little consciousness I have. Finally, a teacher comes to break up the fight, or more like pull Michael of me.

"What the hell is going on?!" I hear Mr. Goodwick ask Michael and the rest of the crowd. Justin helps me up. Blood is all over my shirt.

"Michael started it Mr. Goodwick." Justin says defending me.

"Well I don't care who started it. They are both suspended. Now get him to the nurses office and call his parents!" The crowd disperses as Justin walks me to the front office.

"How the hell did this happen Landon?" My mom asks me, obviously irritated that I interrupted her shift at the hospital. I take the ice pack off my eye and wince in pain.

"A kid bumped into me. I called him an idiot. And the rest is history."

"Calling a person derogatory names is not necessary Landon."

"It is when they purposefully spill soda on my note pad." She just rolls her eyes at the mention of my drawing pad. Her and dad always think drawing is not a real pathway into a successful adulthood. I usually tune them out when they give me those lectures.

"It's fine I'll just buy a new one." Her phone starts to ring.

"All my favorite drawings were in there." She picks up the call and starts walking out.

"Well now you can draw them over again." I grunt and fall back into the bed. After a few minutes my mom comes back in. "I have a new patient at the hospital. I guess You'll just have to tag along.

"Great." I say sarcastically as i pick up my book bag.

Coming to this hospital is always so depressing. I mean yeah it's great and all when babies are born, but if you think about it, someone dies at the same exact time. Me and my mom stop at room 18 in the pediatric floor. We both go into the room as she looks at the chart. "What do we got here Dave." she asks her partner.

"Kyra Nor. Fifteen year old female hit by a car with signs of amnestic syndrome."

"Amnesia?" My mom asks skeptical.

"Retrograde amnesia to be exact." My mom closes the stats and walks over to the girl.

"How are you feeling Kyra?" I look over to see a girl with tan skin and auburn red tight coily shoulder length hair. I feel myself staring at her with my mouth open. Her right cheek has been bruised by the car and she has small cuts around her face with tattoos everywhere.

"I can't remember anything. But besides that fine." She looks up to me and I feel her chocolate brown eyes seeping into me, making the ordeal today at school just melt away.

"Her CT came in fine and so did her MRI. No broken bones but a slight concussion. Besides that she's good to go." Dave says to my mom.

"Any family or friends we can contact to pick her up?"

"We didn't find any contacts in her pockets and she can't remember anyone close to her that lives in Seattle."

"Well we can't just keep her here till someone comes and gets her." Its silent for a moment until my mom speaks again. "She can come stay with us." I look at her confused.

"What?" I ask.

"Oh no doctor its fine I can just stay in a motel or something I'm good really." Kyra says, rejecting the offer. My mom just flaps her hand in disagreement.

"Nonsense sweetheart. I can't let a fifteen year old off by herself in the streets. You can stay at our place till we find someone to take you home." I look at my mom and soon realize the motive behind her kindness. She's just doing this so the family can look good for the cameras. I can't believe she's just using her like this. But like always, I have no say in this families delusional schemes. And besides, I want to get to know Kyra more.
