Everyone stares at me as I walk down the hallway at school. I guess word got out that Michael kicked my ass. By now I would've thought they would just forget about the whole thing. "Hey man. You actually survived that beating." Justin wraps his arm around my shoulders. I laugh at him and roll my eyes.
"It wasn't that serious of a fight."
"Dude. the fight got like massive views and ratings on world star. And the janitor is still trying to clean up the blood stain you left on the ground. It was pretty serious if you ask me and any other person. But all we need to do is stay as far away to Michael as possible." We sit in our regular spot under the tree.
"Trust me, I don't plan on starting any conversation with him for a while." I look to my left to spot Kyra siting on the stairs writing in a book. A smile escapes the creases of my mouth as I see how focused she is. Justin looks back to see what I'm looking at.
"Oh yeah, that's the new girl in my Government class. She's weird."
"Her name is Kyra and she isn't weird." He put his hands up.
"Okay, first of all, little Landy has a crush!" I roll my eyes at him and blush. "And second of all, how do you already know her?"
"My mom is letting her stay at my house until someone claims her."
"Well all I know is that she's been scribbling in that notebook all day." I tilt my head in curiosity.
"I'll be back, I gotta talk to her."
"Go get her tiger!" He says, sarcastically encouraging me. I just ignore him and walk over to Kyra.
"Hey." She immediately closes her note book when she heard me.
"You scared me." She says laughing.
"Uh, sorry about that." I awkwardly take a seat next to her.
"I see your eye has gotten better during the day." She points to my black and blue eye.
"So has your cheek." She laughs and touches her cheek. She clears her throat and opens her notebook.
"So, I looked a name that was inside your dads binder. Her name is Darla Monnet and she's an investigative journalist for the The Seattle Times. Her articles are pretty popular." She gives me a print out of a article about my dad. "She basically worships your dad in her writing."
"Don't really think she has a choice." I hand it back to her. "I guess we can go after school. What's the address?"
"Here." She flips a page in her notebook and shows me the address.
"Whats going on here huh?"Me and her both look up to see Michael standing in front of us. "Little mayors boy has a girlfriend? Did Landon mess up that pretty face of yours?" I just roll my eyes.
"And you are?"Kyra asks him. He squats down in front of her.
"I'm the man of your dreams. Unlike this freak." He smirks at her. She laughs sarcastically.
"That's cute. I bet your big personality makes up for your dick." I chuckle under my breath and he glares at me.
"What are you laughing at?" She gets up and follow.
"He's laughing at the fact that your life is so pathetic that you have to pick on Landon that is clearly superior than you in more than one way. What is this elementary? Grow up a little." And at that we both walk off, leaving him there stunned.
"That was amazing."
"I don't have time for ass hats like him. They're just a complete waste of space." I laugh at her comment.
"You know, you did't have to lie to him about me being better." She laughs and brightly smiles at me.
"I didn't lie."
Going in here alone fills my tense body with awkwardness. Kyra needed to meet with the psychologist to "unlock" her hidden memories. Once I finally enter the correct building floor, people were scampering all around like gazelles running from a predator. I walk among'st the stampede of people to find Darla. Finally, I see a brunette woman who seems to be in her late 20's yelling at a man in a glass office. I wait patiently at the entrance for her to come out. She finally comes stomping out the room obviously angry about something and I try to keep up with her pace. "Um, Hi. Are you Darla Monnet?"
"Yeah who's asking?" You sure know how to pick the charmers dad.
Landon Grayson, David Grayson's son." She stop mid step and slowly turns to me with guilt and shock in her eyes. She then grabs my arm and guides me to a quiet corner.
"How did you find me? Why did you find me?"
"My friend and I found you in my dads folder along with other woman's names."
"Can I see the folder?"
"I don't have it with me, but I took a picture of some of it." I open my camera roll to find the desired picture and show it to Darla. She sighs and pushes my phone against my chest.
"Don't get involved in something you can't fix." And with that, she walks away and continues working. I ponder over her words for a moment, standing there in complete shock. Why would she want to keep this a secret? If she's in love with him, why would she be okay with him having an affair with 20 other women? Then it dawned on me.
He's blackmailing them.
