Chapter 7: Revenge

I tore through the woods; branches and leaves hitting my face while roots pulled on my feet. I could hear Benedict right behind me. The scream had ceased, but I knew the direction it had come from. I burst into the clearing and what I saw made my heart jump into my throat. In the middle of the clearing there stood Smith, he had Rose in a choke hold, and a gun in his right hand pointing to her head. Off to Smith's right Cainen was on the ground, the side of his head bleeding. The rest of the group bust through, there were gasps.

Smith looked around at each of us. "Good! You're all here. Now we're going to have a nice, pleasant conversation. I've already called back up on this phone you're friends supplied for me. And if you try anything funny this gun is not on safety."

I glared at him, "What do you want to talk about?"

Smith began tapping Rose's head with the tip of the gun, "Hmm."

Rose was usually calm and collected but right now she was shaking and crying. I could feel my anger rising, Benedict grabbed my right elbow; he could tell that I was ready to kill Smith.

"First things first, you all must sign a contract to work for the military and be our super soldiers."

I stepped forward, "We're not going to be your super soldiers."

An evil grin crossed Smith's face, "You will if you don't want a bullet in your friend's head."

I met Rose's tear-filled blue-gray eyes, "Hazen, get the other's out of here. I'll be fine."

I looked at the group individually, they all nodded at me. "Rose, we're not leaving you. We're all in this together."

Shawn and Bo started mumbling/singing We're All in This Together from Highschool Musical.

I shot them a look that said if-you-don't-stop-I-will-kill-you. They both stopped and quietly apologized.

"Well this has all been touching but our ride is going to be here soon," Smith cut in.

"We're not going!" I said firmly.

Smith sighed, "Oh yes you are."

There was a loud chopping sound, a rough wind started blowing. I looked up and saw a helicopter above us. A light trained on Smith. I'd had enough. I charged for Smith, he shoved Rose away just as I landed on him. I threw punches at his face and chest. Smith kicked me up and over him. I landed with a thud on my back. I glanced around at the group, waiting on them to help me. I understood why they hadn't moved, the helicopter had pointed lasers on them; if they moved they would be shot dead. Smith wobbly stood up and steadied himself. He walked over to me, he stood right above me with a busted lip, bloody nose, and black eye. I instantly knew that there was no escaping. I failed everyone, I'm a terrible leader. We're doomed. All hope is lost.

Smith pointed the gun at me. Smith grinned evilly, I could see his yellowed teeth. "I've been waiting a long time for this. You've caused enough trouble."

I heard a click and felt the bullet pierce through my head. Then only blackness.
