It was the third week of September and the leaves had already started to turn red, purple, orange, yellow, and brown. Quebec was always so lively around fall time. Everyone was trying to take advantage of the last few warm days before the winter hit.

Jenn was out and about on Saturday, wearing a simple jeans and tee shirt under her leather jacket with a pair of sunglasses and her red lipstick.

"Okay, I'll call you later. Stephanie." Jenn hung up on her new college friend.
They met on her second day of college. Jenn decided to switch into the medical doctor program after all and ended up meeting Stephanie who shared three of her classes. They hit it off from the start.

Reaching Le Café Noir's doors, she let herself and ordered her usual black coffee.

"One black coffee right here." A voice said from behind her.

She spun around so fast, she slipped and fell.

William caught her and steadied her, but at the cost of his drink.

The coffee crashed to the ground and sprayed his shoes, covering them in the brown, steaming liquid.

They stood there, facing each other. Jenn so shocked, her mouth kept opening and closing, lost for words. He had stolen them all.

Eventually, William spoke. "I think the word you're looking for is sorry." He teased, bending down to pick up the now empty coffee cup.

Jenn recovered enough of her senses to speak. "What are you doing here?"

"You were always ranting and raving about how beautiful it was here in the fall, so I decided to come."

Jenn nodded.

"And I was in the neighbourhood and I decided to pop in here to check it out.

She arched an eyebrow.

He smiled sheepishly. "I've been here since this morning, waiting for you."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

He frowned. "My phone was stolen and I lost all my contacts. I wanted to tell you, but I couldn't reach you."

She nodded, understandingly.

An odd silence fell between them.

A barista eventually came from behind the counter to clean up the mess, breaking the spell.

"Sorry," Jenn blurted out. "About the coffee, I mean."

"It's all good." William smiled.

"Can I buy you another one, if you want?" She bit her lip, unsure.

William considered it, making Jenn even more nervous. "As long as you accompany me to the Chateau Frontenac."

Jenn grinned. "I would be my pleasure."
