Exhausted, the two friends sat shoulder to shoulder in the Japanese styled bar. Even though Eva was with Si Yeon this time around, her and alcohol seemed to be a reoccurring event. She decided to limit herself with one glass of sake, enough to settle her nerves. Who knew that an unspoken rule would cause her to savor every sip of the expensive drink.
The glass sat in front of her, tempting her to order more as the ice began to outweigh the alcohol amount. When the coworkers had arrived they were the only people in the bar. Now, it was buzzing, people filed in left and right until every seat was taken. Dinner rush came to it's peak, chatter so loud Eva could barely hear her friend speak.
"I still can't believe this happened in the span of a week," Si Yeon pouted remorsefully, poking her half eaten noodles with a chopstick. "And you didn't tell me either! That's what friends are for!" She whined over dramatically, her last remarks washed out from the background noise.
Eva stared at her friend sheepishly. She had barely touched her own noodles, even the chopsticks she had been given were still wrapped in the flimsy paper. She was too exhausted to take them out.
Si Yeon had ordered her another glass of sake but she refused to drink it. She wanted to be sober tonight when she met Jumin.
But of course Eva couldn't tell her friend that. No matter how much she trusted her, it was too soon.
"I know, I'm sorry." The woman sighed, eyes flickering to the glass of alcohol. "I didn't want to bother anyone, and I was so focused on getting a place to stay that it slipped my mind."
Eva thought Si Yeon wouldn't believe her. Yet after glancing at her sympathetic expression, she knew she had succeeded. She felt bad about lying to her friend, but it was only a white lie. Eva really did focus all of her attention on finding her own place yesterday.
All of that was true, excluding the night before when she treated herself to a night well spent with her sexy, rich, and mysterious boss.
"Hello? Earth to Eva?" Si Yeon chuckled, waving her hands right in front of her face. "What's up with you babe? You haven't touched your food."
Eva played it cool, sticking her tongue out. "Neither have you."
Si Yeon sighed. She couldn't tease about not eating the noodles when they weren't good in the first place. "I guess. I'm tired, it's been a long day."
Eva nodded in agreement, checking her phone for the time. Nothing was appetizing enough to distract her growing nerves.
The woman's eyes widened in surprise. "Dammit, it's already 8?"
She hadn't realized how long they had chatted. It mostly consisted of Eva venting, but it took up all of their time together.
"Do you need to be somewhere?" Si Yeon slurped her noodles loudly, a slight frown appearing on her face.
"Yeah.. uh... I promised my mom." Eva lied through gritted teeth.
"Then go!"
"Okay okay!" Eva scrambled to gather her belongings. She slung her purse over her shoulder and slipped her jacket back on.
The woman glanced at her untouched bowl of noodles, then to the remaining glass of sake.
"Drink it." Si Yeon urged. "You're gonna need it when you break the news to your mom."
Knowing it would be a waste to leave it, Eva tipped her head back and let the liquor slide down her throat. She slammed the glass on the counter and groaned. It still didn't taste good.
"I'll see you tomorrow Si!" Eva kissed her friend's cheek on the way out.
"Gross." Si Yeon chuckled, smacking her butt as she left.
