"Okay squad leaders!" Yelled Chrissi. "Meet me in room three in five minutes! The rest of you, prepare yourselves for the mission tomorrow."
When Chrissi walked away, we all headed for our rooms. Except for Evany, Domonic, and the other leaders from squad three and four.
"I'll see you guys later." Mason said as he walked toward the boy's bunker.
"Okay, see you later." I started for the restrooms on side of the hallway opposite of the bunkers.
"Where are you going?" asked Rissi.
"I have to use the restroom."
Rissi raised her eyebrow as if suspecting trouble.
"It's just the restroom!" I defend myself. "I'm not going to drown in the toilet!"
"Whatever." She huffs with a smile as she hurries away.
Once Rissi and Mason went to their cabins, I took off. I didn't have to go to the bathroom, but I wanted some alone time; away from all the drama. I was hoping to get some peace and quiet. Someplace I could think freely and reflect on what I learned from my dreams.
I walked into the bathroom right next to where they were holding the meeting. I walked up to the cracked mirror hanging above the sink, and splashed my face with cold water from the faucet to cool down. It helped, and I was able to think more clearly. I heard indistinct voices from the wall, and knew they were coming from the other side. The meeting with the supervisors was taking place.
I knew I shouldn't eavesdrop on the conversation, as it might not be beneficial for me, but I pressed my ear to the wall and listened anyway, ignoring my conscience.
A woman started the conversation first. "As you well know we are short on soldiers at the Romanda, and we were barely able to scrounge up a team to send here. It is vital that we keep our best soldiers protecting the Romanda; since it's our main base. What I don't understand is why we needed to send these squads here in the first place. They are our best squad in training. You have enough troops of your own, don't you?"
It is Evany. I can tell it's her because of her voice and the way she increased her pitch abnormally to end the question.
Another woman responded, her voice just a touch deeper than Evany's. "No. We lost our main squad and their leader not long ago. We have been putting in requests for new soldiers to take their place for a while, but we just now received them. We almost collapsed after they went MIA."
There is silence now; the only sound is that of the buzzing light bulb above my head.
"Why was I not informed of this at the briefing?" Evany responds sharply.
"Captain Goodstalk didn't want you to know because he thought you would drop out of the mission if you did."
"So we are here to make up for the lost men? They were stationed here and we're not going to move. You thieving, backstabbing, ruthless, idiot! No one told me this was a permanent mission!" Evany screamed. "You can't do that. You can't do that to people!"
"Evany," The woman started.
"No. You have no reason to try and comfort me, and I give you no reason to. I left my family at the Romanda. They are unprotected, and you didn't care to tell any of us that we would be here permanently? What kind of sick-"
"Evany stop." A man's voice interrupts this time.
I was interested at that. I looked for any way to see who was talking, but I knew it would be hard with several layers of wall in the way. I found a crack in the corner of the wall. I put my hand to it and felt a draft. It led to the other room. If only I could rip it open just a little more...
