Chapter 4

Danielle Connors

This game is bound to be interesting. I know it.

It feels like this game is not just for Adrian to prove himself to the team that he can manage his own weight but also for me to prove to Adrian that even though I’m a girl, I do not need any special treatments.

My first batter, Ron, is up at the plate right now with two balls and two strikes. I have to give it to Adrian he has a hell of an arm. I’m just hoping he doesn’t get the three outs before I get to go up.

Thankfully on the next pitch Ron manages to get ahold of the ball and hits a line drive right over the second base where the center fielder goes for the ground ball giving Ron a single.

My next batter unfortunately struck out while the other one hit a pop fly and it was caught. Going up to base with two outs always sucks, well to me it did anyways. I always felt this huge amount of pressure rest on my shoulders.

I grabbed my helmet and bat and stepped up to the plate. Lifting the bat and bending my knees into my batting stance, I waited for Adrian to pitch the ball. He looked over his shoulder at Ron on first making sure he wasn’t doing any funny business before looking back at me with a smirk on his face.

He winds his arm back and throws the ball. I feel my body tense up but don’t swing since the pitch was too low.

Ball one.

They throw the ball back to Adrian who starts the process all over again. Looks at Ron. Check. Looks at me. Check. Smirk. Check.

He finally throws the ball again and again I didn’t swing but I realized too late that the ball was in fact in the strike zone leaving me with one ball and one strike.

I step out of the batter’s box and take a few warm up swings again while I relax my mind. Back into game mode, I step up to the plate once again.

Adrian does his whole process again, and yes the idiot still smirks at me, but this time I’m ready for him, so when he throws the ball at me I get a piece of it and hit a line drive down right field where it falls to the ground.

I drop my bat and run like a bitch to first base while I already see Ron rounding second and heading to third.

Damn bastard is fast.

I make it to first just as the right fielder throws the ball to second to prevent anyone from advancing.

I look over to Adrian with my left foot on the bag and see his surprised expression and I smirk back at him.

Ha jerk didn’t think I could keep up I thought.

Our next batter hits a ground ball through the hole between second and shortstop bringing Ron home scoring us a run. I on the other hand had to book it as fast as possible and barley made it to second as I slid to the base. Thankfully coach called me safe.

After that our next batter was struck out and we went into the bottom of the first inning up by one.

I ran into the dug-out to quickly grab my catchers gear and put it on while I walk back out onto the field, when I run into something hard, or I should say someone, as I feel them grab my shoulders to prevent me from falling

“Whoa watch where you’re going Little Red.” Adrian  says with his hands still on my shoulders, I quickly shrug them off and continue walking out onto the field.

“Little Red,” He calls me and I turn to face him and see him completely serious, which believe me when I say it’s a strange sight, “Nice hit.” He tells me and I nod at him.
