Chapter 8

Danielle Connors

I hadn’t talked to Adrian since the incident in the hallway with Barbie, and let’s just say things have been a little awkward.

And by a little, I mean a lot.

Right now I am sitting in the dugout with ice on my wrist as the team is practicing as today is my second and last day with my gimpy wrist and then I’ll be able to practice tomorrow as long as I take it easy on my wrist.

Coach tried to get me to go home yesterday after school, but I refused saying that Ron was my ride home, which was true, and we made a compromise that I could stay as long as I stay seated with ice on my wrist.

I reluctantly agreed.

So here I am right now watching my team out there running their warm-up and I’m just sitting and surprisingly, I never thought I’d see the day where I’d miss running.

I let out a sigh and continue to watching the team as they now get ready for some drills. Getting a little bored, and irritated, I take out the tennis ball I carry in my bag and start throwing it with my good hand against the wall in the dugout, making it bounce back to me.

I keep doing this for a while until the boys finish their drills and move onto a quick scrimmage and I stop to watch the game.

I see Adrian and Ron are the captains picking their team, and based off of their choices, I can already see that this is going to be a good game.

I’m rooting for Ron.

Screw Adrian and his jerk-iness.

Adrian’s team takes the field as Ron’s tem fills in the dugout that I’m currently sitting in while Ron himself starts on a batting line-up for his team. Watching Adrian warm-up on the mound, I can’t help but notice the way his muscles flex as he does what his body was meant to do. His movements are fluid and precise yet at the same time you can’t help but notice the strength his body holds.

The sound of Michael calling my name breaks me out of my trance as I realize that I was checking out Adrian.

I mentally slap myself for letting myself go there. We all know what type of person Adrian is.

“See something you like Dani?” Michael asks me with a knowing glance over at Adrian who continues warming up his arm.

I just glare at Michael, and see him cower away as he can tell I’m in a bad mood today, before turning back to look at the field, and not at a certain pitcher.

I shake off all of this as I see Ron’s first batter walk to the plate.

Adrian looks over at his catcher for his signal and gives a nod before taking a deep breath and then quickly winds his arm back before throwing a fast ball right in the strike zone as the batter tries to hit it, but his timing was way off.

That’s how fast Adrian threw that ball.

This continues until Adrian strikes out two batters and it’s time for Ron to bat.

Ron manages to get a single off of Adrian’s curveball but then the next batter is grounded out and the teams switch.

Meaning Adrian and his team are going to be in the dugout with me.

Ron talks to his teams pitcher before taking his place on first base and begins warming up while Adrian’s team file into the dugout while Adrian begins writing up a line up.

When he finishes he looks up and stares at me. I stare back until I hear our short stop, Drew, call me.

“What do you want loser?” I shout across the dugout making the team laugh.
