Chapter Nine
Danielle Connors
The next few days passed in a blur. I was finally able to go back to practice after promising myself never to get hurt again.
Those two days without baseball were torture.
Yet despite being back on the field, I wasn’t able to enjoy myself to the fullest considering Adrian and I have been avoiding each other like the plague and this little fact hasn’t gone unnoticed by the rest of the team, including Coach.
Needless to say, things have been awkward, so instead I’ve thrown myself full force into my baseball and exercising. After practice, I’ve started running for at least an hour just to avoid going home and facing my dad.
With all that has been going on, time has flown by and now it is the morning of our first game, even though it’s just a scrimmage game with our main rival school from the next town over.
This game was almost and early league championship game since everyone already knows it’s going to be between us as it has always been.
So I walk into school today, wearing my jersey with Connors on the back right above the number 1, with my head held high and eager for the game today.
Playing out rival school Northview has always been somewhat personal to me seeing how they always target me as they think that since I’m a girl means that I’m the weakest. Well they’re wrong as you can tell.
I hurry up and run to my locker and put away my books, only keeping the ones I’ll need for my first few classes, and skip to class in a good mood. Game days always make me happy rather than nervous like it does to some of the guys on the team.
While in my own little world I don’t realize that the person in front of me has suddenly stopped causing me to crash into a rock hard back making me fall flat on my butt and drop my books.
“Ow.” I complain as I stand up and rub my butt. That’s going to leave a bruise.
“Sorry,” I hear a deep voice say as we both bend down to pick up the books I have just dropped.
“Thanks,” I say with a smile when I see a hand reach over to pass me my book, yet when I looked up I saw a pair of familiar blue eyes and my smile instantly dropped.
I quickly grab my book from Adrian’s hand and try to walk right passed him but he stops me but firmly grabbing my arm, but not in a painful way.
“Danielle,” He whispers my name causing me to suppress a shiver at the sound of my name coming from his mouth.
I look over at Adrian with a defeated expression, “Not right now Daniels. Let’s get through this game first then we can talk.” I tell him and see his jaw clench.
“Fine but after today’s game you are talking to me whether you like it or not.” He informs me and walks right into our health class making me sigh in relief, well for now at least.
The day goes by quick and before I realize it I’m in my fifth period class. Halfway through class we hear the static from the PA.
“All teachers please dismiss the boys’ baseball team for their away game right now, I repeat please dismisses all boys on the baseball team for their away game. Thank you.” With that I, along with Adrian, Ron, and Michael, get out of our seats and head towards the locker room to dress out for our game.
I split up from the guys as I walk into the girl’s locker room and they go to their locker room. I get dress as quick as I can before the girl’s P.E. class walks in because I remember that blonde Barbie that I saw with Adrian that other day has it this period.
