I'm just finished getting dressed when Edmund announces his arrival, but I hear an additional set of footsteps follow him in.
"Hey Ed, I'm in my room." I call out to him, glancing towards the hall.
"Ok Em!" He answers.
He appears in the doorway, smiling, though his eyes are red from tears.
"How was it?" I ask him.
"It was fine, sad, but fine."
"Emma?" The deep voice of a criminal asks.
"Edmund, why is he here?" I ask, my blood freezing in my veins.
Edmund just sort of smiles sadly and walks away.
I am left with no defence against the man I once called my father.
He takes off his fedora and spins it in his hands.
"What are you doing here?" I ask him, angry.
"Emma." He sighs.
My brain decides to make a run for it, and the closest space to run is my bed.
I go for it, diving onto the floor and crawling under my bed, making sure my legs are tucked under.
I cower in the corner, facing the wall with my eyes tightly shut and my hands over my ears.
I scream when a hand brushes against me, letting go of my ears to smack it away.
"Brat?" Comes the curious shout of Ressler, and I regain hope.
"Donnie!" I yell in turn.
I see Raymond scramble away.
The door bangs open and Ressler comes in.
"Emma? Where are you!" He asks.
"Under here." I say weakly.
He sinks to the floor and looks at me.
"What are you doing under there?" He asks, pulling me out from under the bed.
"Hiding." I answer as he lowers me into my chair.
"From who?" He asks, confused.
It is in that moment that I break down in tears.
"Hey- I didn't mean it- I'm sorry that I asked." Donald says, throwing a blanket around my shoulders and rubbing my back.
"Come on, I'm taking you out to get some lunch."
