Melanie"He said he's sorry!"
I roll my almond eyes, picking at my nails which are in need of a serious manicure before I attempt to adjust my slouched position upwards against the headboard of the hotel bed. "Sorry won't heal Harry's bruises, mom. Harry's lucky my dad didn't fracture his jaw or break his nose, he was being viciously violent and-"
"¡¿Es la Melanie?! (Is it Melanie?!)" I'm abruptly cut off by the familiar loud voice that belonged to my obnoxious grandmother whom despite her 'too wild for her age' behavior I still had room in my heart for.
"Si, mama. (Yes, mom.)" My mother responds with a hint of displeasure in her tone.
"¿Oye, y siempre anda con ese hombre guapo? (So, is she still with that handsome man?)" My grandmother ponders my mother with curiosity.
"Si. (Yes.)" My mom confirms.
"¡Pues sólo mírala, se cogió un chico blanco! (Well just look at her, she got herself a white boy!)" My grandmother notes in her own amusement, which is ironic because my granddad is Italian and my dad has a British background, I guess it runs in the family?
"I'm sorry about that," My mother apologizes as I hear footsteps echo away in the background which I presume is my grandmother stepping out of the room. "But like I said, your dad... he's just got a.. temper right now. He's behind in work, he just got out of jail, and to top it off he finds out his former best friend is dating his daughter. Melanie you have to understand!"
Again, my eyes subconsciously roll into the back of my head in an irritated manner. "Have you two ever had a conversation about that? Do you honestly believe my dad didn't have sex with that girl? Temptations are real, Mom, stop blinding yourself. I know my dad denied it but what if he lied? I love you so much, I never want to see you hurt, even if it means I'll be against my own father. I saw the sadness in your eyes yesterday, it was pain because you're trying to convince yourself-"
"Stop! That's enough lecturing, Melanie." I could hear the scowl my mother wears on her face, draining me from the want to make her face the tragic reality. She's still so in love with my father to the point that she's willing to convince herself into believing he isn't lying to her.
"Don't make yourself blind." I repeat before hanging up. Any further conversation would simply be redundant considering my mother made it clear she didn't want to hear what's best for her.
I didn't want my parents to get a divorce, but something like this is simply unforgivable. Love doesn't just die and it isn't something to take for granted, my mother knows the value of it, only a few people in life get to experience real love and my parents are one of those few people. The love is still there, but the matrimony is hanging by a thread. However, self control does exist, and that's what my father should have had in that very moment, but he didn't. Their trust has been broken and it's all his fault.
The fact that my mother and I are going through similar situations trying to convince ourselves that the men we love feel the same way is ironic. I know I'm the last person to be giving love advice considering mine is at an all time low, but I know right from wrong even if I choose the wrong I'm well aware. I know what my mother deserves, and a cheating husband isn't. I'll let myself idiotically get hurt, but I would never bare for someone I love go through the same.
I sigh as I put my phone aside, determined to get up to get a cup of water when I whipped my head back towards the doorway where Harry steps through wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans along with the bruise on his face. The bruises along his torso were covered by the material of his t-shirt. He takes off his ray-ban sunglasses, hanging them on the V of his t-shirt and strolls his way over to me after closing the door.
