Eriexia placed her hand in his and positioned the other between his neck and shoulder. They gradually began to dance. Twirling, turning and swaying, always holding each other’s hand, his arm holding her close, safely in the middle of her back. All eyes watched in awe and admirance as he twirled her one last time. The music gradually came to an end. Eriexia curtsied, but her hand remained firmly in his. Matthuis walked her across the dance floor. Then he smiled...

It was Lunch time and the girls where sitting by the wall opposite the school back yard. Cat sat with her back to the wall, listening to Pixie’s relationship status. There was a mild fall breeze that was frequently flipping Pixie’s copper blonde hair into her face. Yazmin turned to face Cat, “You’ve been very quiet, you alright?” Cat looked up, “Yeah, sure.”

“Are you sure cuz you don’t seem to...”

“I already told you, I’m fine!” Pixie was cut off by Cat’s sudden outburst. Scarlet’s head shot up from her laptop. “You are so PMSing!”

“I am not,” there was a short pause, “Justin asked me out.”

“What?!” Yazmin and Pixie exclaimed in unison. Cat sighed, playing back how it happened;

The bell rang, Cat hurried to the outside of Yazmin, Scarlet and Pixie’s class, English had been a drag and after another episode like that, things where not looking up. “Hey, Cat wait up.” Oh crap, Cat thought, Justin was following her again. She stooped and turned. “Aren’t you supposed to be at basketball practice.”

“I am, but I was wondering, uh, you wanna go downtown Friday?” Got loads I wanna show ya.” Cat raised her eyebrow completely unimpressed. She sighed, “Look, Justin...” she stopped seeing the eagerness in his face, “I’ll think about it. OK?” There was a short pause, “Well, uh, guess I’ll see y’around then,” the tone of his voice was despairing and full of sorrow. He turned and began to walk away. Cat groaned.

“Justin..” Justin turned, “Yeah”

“..good luck with your game.”

“Right...thanks.” Cat watched as he turned the last of draining from his face.

Cat shut close her eyes, “Justin asked me out ; I said I’d think about it and now,” she tucked her fringe, “he completely hates me.” Pixie put her hand on Cats shoulder to comfort her, “Oh, sweetie, you know he doesn’t hate you. Justin is head over heels for you.” Yazmin folded her hands across her chest, “Uh well, duh. Why wouldn’t he like her? She’s feisty and yet she constantly wanders off into alternate universes; which by the way are two of his favorite things.” Scarlet looked at her, “Yazmin, if you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything at all.”

“I was just sayin’!”

“Well think before you ‘say’ then.”

“You know you need to cool it with the adult talk.”

“Are you saying I’m a control freak?”

“No! I’m just sayin’ that there’s no need to blow your cool about every little thing I get wrong.”

“Blow my cool? Blow my cool? What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“It’s slang for get angry, but obviously you wouldn’t know that cuz you never use slang. Do you? Scarlet!”

“Well, for your information...”

“Will you guys cut it out!” Scarlet and Yazmin looked at the once quiet Cat in shock. Yazmin sat next to Cat and hugged her. “Oh, you’re in a real mess about this aren’t you?”

She leaned back and took a deep breath, “I think you did the right thing. I mean, you didn’t, like, lie to him or anything.”

Scarlet nodded, “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Yazmin’s right. I mean you didn’t like,” she paused, “I mean; you didn’t tell him you’d love to go nor did you say you’d rather be dead than go out with him.”

Yazmin snorted, “Nor!” Scarlet gave her her evilest glare but said nothing. Cat sighed, “That’s just it; I don’t wanna go out with him. It’s not that I hate him, I just don’t like him the way he likes me.” Yazmin sighed, “Well, I know you’ll do the right thing.” Scarlet nodded, “And even if you had said yes, he would have found out in the end.”

Cat smiled, “You guys are the best.”

“Well that’s what we’re here for.” Pixie reassured her. Just then the bell rang. Pixie swept her hair back, “Looks like it’s time for us to vamoosh outta here.” They all burst out laughing. Yazmin pulled a face then stood up, “Let’s go.”

The scion placed her hand in the prince’s and placed the other between his neck and shoulder. They slowly began to dance. Swirling, whirling and swaying, always holding each other’s hand, his arm holding her close, safely on the middle of her back. Everyone watched in admirance as he twirled her one last time. The music came to a slow, stubble end. The scion curtsied in respect but her hand remained firmly in his. The prince walked her across the dance floor. Then he smiled...
