Chapter 23

Soft snores came from Luke as I rolled on my side, facing away from him. I felt conflicted. I wanted to be here, but another part of me wished that I was with Charlie. One thing was for sure though and that was that I was safe from Max. A chill ran down my spine as I remembered everything I did with him and the after life that I almost gave up. 

I crawled out of bed and pulled on one of Luke's shirts and a pair of his boxers because he ruined all of my clothes. I tip toed to the living room and sighed when I saw Josh on the couch watching a movie. He stared at me and I awkwardly waved. Josh patted the spot next to him and I sighed before sitting down. Josh lazily slung his arm around my shoulders and I looked down at my lap.

"Aria?" I looked up and met Josh's blue eyes. He looked worried and I looked away.

"I gotta go. I need to go home. I-I just need some time to think. Please tell Luke that i'm sorry." Tears began to blur my vision and Josh pulled me into a hug. I sobbed softly into his shoulder and he rubbed my back reassuringly. 

"It's none of my business and I'll let Luke know you left. Just try to think hard Aria. I wouldn't want you to regret anything."

I nodded and pulled away. I got off the couch and made sure I had my phone before quietly leaving their dorm and walking into mine. Charlie was sitting on the couch and he looked at me confused for a second before he realized I had been crying and quickly came over to me. He pulled me into his chest and kissed the top of my head. I hugged him tightly back and he quickly scooped me up bridal style and began to walk to his room. I laid my head on his chest and focused on his heartbeat. My eyes began to droop as he set me down in his bed and crawled in next to me. 

"I need my best friend, Charlie. I can't lose you."

"You're not going to cupcake. I love you."

"I love you too, but this whole situation is something that I would normally talk to you about and now I can't. I have to figure all of this out on my own. A-and I can't do it."

"You can talk to me. I'm still your best friend Ar. Go ahead." I sighed and looked into his warm green eyes. I could do this.

"I love you Charlie. I really love you, but Luke is my mate and I love him too. My body craves him all the time, but when I was with him earlier all I wanted was to be with you. My favorite thing is waking up in the morning to the smell of coffee and seeing your messy hair and your warm green eyes that always make me feel perfect. You make me feel things that I have never felt with anyone before. And it breaks my heart in two when I imagine you being with another girl that isn't me. Y-You have a mate though and I know that when you find her i'll lose you forever. You'll fall in love with her and I will die inside. I can't.... I don't know what to do." 

He pulled me tightly to his chest and began to soothingly rub my back. Tears were now flowing freely down my cheeks as I struggled to breathe normally. "Aria, there is no other girl out there for me. There's only you. I've had this feeling for a very long time that my mate is gone. I just... don't feel that connection at all anymore. I love you and I would do anything for you Aria. Stay with me?" I nodded meekly against his chest and he lifted my chin up softly before pressing his lips against mine. He pulled away after a second and I sighed before laying my head back on his chest and falling asleep.

I woke up to my phone buzzing repeatedly and I groaned before moving away from Charlie and grabbing my phone beside me. 

"Hello?"

"Aria! You're okay, thank God. I was so worried. I thought we had a date tonight?"

"Shit. Tyler I'm sorry! I totally forgot. Dang it, Tyler I can't do this anymore."

"Do what?"

"Us. We need to break up, I don't want to hurt you. I do have feelings for you, but something came up and I found my mate and everything is just really out of control right now. I'm really sorry."

"Oh. Uh okay, that's fine. So friends?"

"Definitely."

"Alright, then i'll talk to you soon Ar. See ya." The line went dead and I groaned before laying back down. Charlie wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me back against him, making me giggle. The alarm clock said it was still only two o'clock in the morning, so I closed my eyes and fell back to sleep.

Sun peeked in from Charlie's window and I groaned before trying to open my eyes. Charlie had his arm slung across my waist and his nose in my neck. I giggled and ran my hand up his arm to his hair. It was messy as usual and his green eyes flickered open. A lazy grin made its way onto his face and I smiled softly back. He propped himself up and began twirling a strand of my hair around his finger. I began tracing the features on his face and he slowly bent down to kiss me. I kissed him back before pulling away and jumping out of the bed. He growled lowly and I winked quickly before skipping to his bathroom. 

My hair was a mess and I struggled to comb my fingers through it. I quickly wiped under my eyes and screamed when I saw someone behind me. Max. I could hear Charlie pounding on the door behind me, asking if I was alright. 

"I'm fine. I just saw a spider." Max smirked at me and I took a step backwards. He watched me with amusement, but made no move to come closer to me.

"I told you to leave me alone."

"Did you angel? Hm, I don't remember that." He took one step closer and my breath caught in my throat. I could feel my heart beating a million miles per hour as my back hit the wall.
