Charlie kept his arm around me as we walked across campus. For a moment, I had forgot that anything had happened at all. It just seemed so normal. That's all I wanted, for everything to be normal again. Whether or not that happened was unclear, only time would tell.

The walk became quiet and if we're being honest, not a comfortable kind of quiet. More like the kind, where you are on an awkward date and there is literally nothing to talk about. Maybe we would not be able to be the same kind of friends that we were before. Maybe distance was what we needed. Charlie looked at me before making up an excuse about having to go study. I nodded as if I believed him and watched him walk away. Yet, we both know that Charlie does not study.

Shaking my head, I continued walking aimlessly through buildings and quiet hallways. My mind was scattered and could not seem to focus on any one thing. A hand reached out, grabbing my wrist and pulling me into a room.

My eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness that consumed them and I knew when I felt a shiver go up my spine that it was Max. His white teeth seemed even visible in the dark as he smiled at me. A frown quickly covered that up when he saw my look of anger and he ran his fingers up my arm, teasing every nerve in my body.

"I miss you, princess. Come back to me" His voice was soft and full of an emotion that I never thought I would hear from a demon, love. My head fell as I tried to avoid his gaze and his purple eyes. Eyes that you could truly get lost in. His fingers continued tracing patterns on my shoulder blades and down my back, making my body feel weak. I shook my head and tried to sort out the mess of words bobbing around in my head.

"No. Max, this will never happen. You're dead. You're evil.... this is wrong." Max circled his arms around me, pulling me fully against him. My body felt calm and every problem I was having seemed to disappear. How could someone so evil have the ability to make me feel so... at peace?

It was an ironic concept of feeling at peace when the man who made me feel that way was dead. But he made death seem peaceful and like everything would be alright. This felt like a game that I was going to lose. I breathed in his smell and sighed against his chest. His fingers twirled locks of my hair around, while his other hand rubbed my back. Luke. I had to focus on him. He was my future, my life. As if Max seemed to know what I was thinking, he pressed further against me, against the wall, breathing heavily into my ear. His tongue flicked out and ran up my neck to my ear. My hands held tightly to his sides, keeping myself in control. This was not a time to be weak and honestly I was sick of letting people walk all over me. This was my life.

With a hard shove, Max took a few steps back. He raised an eyebrow it was seemed to be surprise, while crossing his arms across his chest. I rubbed my palms together, trying to calm myself down in anyway possible. He smirked back at me, clearly seeing how frazzled I was.

"Max. Stop." He took a step forward and I could feel the tension hanging in the air between us.

"You're all I have Ar. The only piece of my existence that isn't miserable. How can I give that up for a stupid dog who doesn't even understand how much you're worth." Taking a deep breath, I put my hand out. "You can be in my life. But I'm not going to let you corrupt my soul. We can be friends. You don't have to always be miserable." His smirk seemed to slip away and was replaced with a troubled look.

Max took my hand and held it to his chest. You could almost see the thoughts trolling through his mind. His eyes met mine and he smiled. Not evil or threatening, but genuine. "I'll try." And all at once everything seemed lighter. Instead of shivers, I felt warmth radiating off of Max. His fangs seemed to retreat back into his gums, being replaced by normal teeth. He looked almost human.
