"Yes, mom. I've just finished my presentation, and I'm heading to the airport." I sighed, rubbing my forehead in frustration. My presentation hadn't exactly gone according to plan, and I was running late for my flight. I'd be lucky if I made it on time. "I'll let you know when I land. See you at the airport. I love you." I hung up with my mother, driving quickly to the airport.
After spending fifteen minutes looking for parking, I was left with twenty minutes to get checked in, through security, and on the plane. I rushed through the main doors, running over to the desk for my airline.
"Andrew Sager for flight 143 at one," I stated as I showed my ID.
The woman behind the desk typed furiously. Her eyes widened as she printed my ticket. "My, you're running a little late." She handed me my ticket and ID. "I hope you make your flight!" She called after me as I sprinted toward security. Luckily, there was no line. I slipped my shoes off, tossing them, my keys, and my belt in a bucket. I stepped through the large detector, and sighed in frustration because it dinged.
I stepped back and reached into the pocket of my blazer, tossing away a pen. "Sorry, I forgot that was in there. You can trash it." I stepped through this time, and the machine was silent. I nodded at the security men, then grabbed my things and sprinted toward my terminal. Over the PA system, I heard someone announce a last boarding call for my flight. I groaned, pushing myself to run even faster. Just before they were closing the gates, I got there.
"Andrew Sager," I panted between breaths as I presented my ticket. "Also may I put my shoes back on before I board this plane." I smiled.
The woman smiled, shaking her head. "You just made it, Mr. Sager. We'll get your luggage loaded for you. Have a nice flight."
I relaxed for the firs time all day. It felt nice. I straightened my tie, then buttoned my blazer before making my way to my seat. Once I arrived there, I was pleasantly surprised to see the aisle to myself. No one had purchased the other seat. I slid down, leaning my head back and closing my eyes.
For the first time, it actually registered with me that I was going home. I was going back to the small, sleepy town of Raymond. For the first time in a long time, I thought of my previous girlfriend Poppy. I sighed. Maybe I shouldn't have tried so hard to catch this flight.
