10:03am sunday october 4th 1988

i awake in the front seat, my face pushed up against the steaming, hot window. i see wide open fields and look over to see j.d. looking calm.

"good morning, babe."

"have you been up all night? i can drive, pull over."

"i'm good, i was about to stop for a slushie. blueberry?"

i nod my head, smiling at him. my phone was ringing loudly in my bag. i climb into the backseat and grab it.

"hello?"

"hey it's edna! we had plans, remember?"

i had totally forgotten that edna and i were going rollerskating today with maria.

"oops."

"where the hell are you? i went over to your house and your mother said you went on a trip?"

"i'm with j.d."

"oh i see how it is."

"no no, he came and picked me up yesterday morning, i've been gone all weekend. i'm sorry. maybe another time. i'll call you."

"okay, love you."

"love you too."

i climb back into the front seat as j.d. pulls into the convenience store.

"get some candy."

he nods at me as i put my feet up on the dashboard. i see a wanted sign plastered on the side of the building and get out of the car to look closer. i get to the sign and see it was j.d. it said he was wanted for murder homicide.

"holy shit." i rip the sign off and walk inside with my shades down, hoping no one would notice i was even here.

"j.d. we need to go as soon as possible."

"what are you talking about darling? we just got here."

"well, you need to explain this to me. i was hoping the cops didn't find you first."

"shit. where did you find this?"

"outside the store, let me check out, get out to the car now."

i grab the slushies out of his hand and the candy and go to the checkout, handing the cashier the cash. he hands me back change and i run out to the car. j.d. had it started and i hopped in as we quickly drove away. we exited to the interstate and i look over the sign.

"is this why we left? cause you are in trouble with the law?"

"no, i wanted us to be happy."

"this was part of it, wasn't it? just tell me the truth."

"shit, i really thought they would leave me alone."

"what are you talking about?"

"the other night, i got called into the police station. they opened up the cases again."

"what cases?"

"shelley, ram, and kurt. they know something was up, supposedly something of mine was left at one of the crime scenes."

"shit. they'll figure out that i was part of it too, i'll go to jail!"

"i won't turn you in. that's why we are on the run."

"we are running from the cops?! i'm never getting into a good college! my life has gone to complete shit, ever since i laid eyes on you. god, i'm such an idiot."

"hey, you can't blame this all on me."

"i can! i can! i can! i'm so stupid for falling for you. it's the truth and you know it!"

"jesus, i love you too madeline." he rolls his eyes, taking a sip of his slushie.

"j.d. please don't be that way." i lay my hand on his thigh and he places one of his hands on mine.

"i know i shouldn't have taken you."

"you didn't take me, i voluntarily came with you because i love you."

he gives me a small smile and continues to drive down the highway.

"my parents are going to become suspicious."

"your parents didn't even seem to care that a guy came and took you for the weekend and you are only 17!"

"don't call my parents stupid!"

"i wasn't. don't take words out of my mouth!"

"i'm not, it's just that i can tell what you are trying to say even if you are directly saying it."

"i've got myself a smart girl don't i?" he says sarcastically, smacking my hand away from him.

"don't be a dick." i cross my arms, leaning towards the window.

he does not say anything back to me but i see a sign approaching and see what it said in big letters.

WELCOME TO INDIANA

"what in the hell are we doing in indiana?"

"getting away, remember?"

"i didn't think that meant a new state!"

"well it did honey."

he pulls into a diner, looking to me as he unbuckles his seatbelt.

"are you going to cooperate if we go in?"

i nod my head at him, but as soon as he turns around i roll my eyes. he was treating me like a child, but i guess that's just what a wanted criminal acts like.
