We have finally passed through Laketown, Legolas has Bofur and I down on our knees swabbing the deck of all monster blood. He is just making us do what he is too lazy to.
"We are upon my father's kingdom." Legolas murmurs, "On your feet!" Bofur and I do as instructed and get to our feet. Thranduil stands on a dock of carven wood, swirling and dipping gracefully into the water. Legolas relaxes, he knows these lands.
"Thranduil." I greet him as if I had not seen him but a few moons ago.
"Greetings, Kili, Bofur" I notice how he leaves out Legolas's name, as if it hurts too much "Welcome... to Elfsewhere." It is odd, seeing it through a visitor's eyes rather than a prisoner's.
"By my beard, Kili lad," Bofur found a supply of elven wine on the boat... that stuff is strong "It's like we're goin' back in time." He says before falling prostrate before the elven king. The smallest hint of a smile plays at Thranduil's lips.
"You'll have to carry him in I believe.: Thranduil turns to the snickering guards. They straighten immediately, all of a sudden at the ready. A small drawbridge drops down onto the boat, we unload and unboard. Legolas walks to his father.
"How long might we stay?" Legolas asks "Because we can't stay longer than we need to, we've got hard work ahead." Thranduil turns gracefully to face me.
"That, my Mellon is up to Kili to decide." Thranduil's response is calm and assuring. Legolas turns to me as well and bows his head. I bow my head in response.
"How long then?" Legolas asks raising his head.
"Two days seems enough to rest," I pause "If that is okay with Thranduil here?" Thranduil nods, it will also be enough time for me to visit the cell I realized I was visited by Tauriel in.
"The stone in you're hand...what is it?" She pauses right in front of my cell, as I flip my mother's promise over and over again, wondering if I'll ever see her again.
"It is a talisman." I pause for a dramatic effect "A powerful spell lies upon it, if anyone but a dwarf reads the runes on the stone..." She leans in curious.
"They will be forever cursed!" I hold up the stone as if I expect her to read and believe it. She makes a face and begins to walk away "Or not... Depending on whether you believe in that kind of thing or not, it's just a token." I give a little laugh hoping she'll catch on.
"It's a runestone." I flip it again "My mother gave it to me so I'd remember my promise."
"What promise?" She asks sitting down on the step beside my cell.
"That I'd return to her." I look away breaking the intimate gaze she's got me locked in. "She worries, she thinks I'm reckless." I flip the stone again,
"Are you ?" She asks getting up and pacing... she seems rather restless.
"Yeah, I'm Kili by the way." I slide in my name, hoping to get an answer.
"And I'm Tauriel." She smiles, and we sit talking about fire moons and starlight feasts and childhood stories and favorite things, she didn't leave till late that night.
"Kili? Kili!" Bofur's voice brings me back "Could you help me out here lad... I'm being assaulted!" I laugh, it's the Elfsewhere guard trying to carry him to a better bed than the wooden dock.
"Legolas, Kili come." Thranduil motions for us to follow him to his throne room. And I follow, ever the obedient dog.
