I awoke to the smell of drugs and blood. "Y/N?" A voice said. "Y/N, you're going to be just fine." I realized it was no one I knew who was talking beside my hospital bed, just a nurse doing her job. "You fainted from shock, sweetheart. You're going to be just fine." She repeated.
"D-allas." I gasped through a breathing mask on my face.
"He's going to be okay too." She smiled warmly. I wasn't in the mood for charity. "He got shot once, but he'll be okay." The 'shot' thing made me wince, causing me to remember the book's one liner of him dying. "You feeling okay? I mean, do you have any mental illnesses? Goodness, you have to be the bravest kid I've ever met. I mean, you know those were two were known criminals, right? Or three, I suppose, since you're friend Dallas is a-" She went on giggling and babbling that I'm in the newspaper or something. She handed me my juice and a cookie, which I snacked on as she kept talking.
"You okay now, honey?" She said, with actual concern in her face. As if she actually cared about me, I nodded. "Aw good. You're friends are here to see you." She pranced over to the door and opened it to let the gang in.
"What do you think you're doing? You could have gotten yourself killed!" Darry swore at me. I looked into my lap, refusing to meet eye contact with him.
"I didn't want it to happen." I muttered.
"What?"
"If I'm going to spoil the end of the book, I may as well just tell Dally at the same time." I breathed. "He up yet?"
Two-Bit shook his head, "Not yet."
The nurse eavesdropping on our conversation said, "I don't think you'll be able to see him for another four hours or more yet." She said as Two-Bit opened the door, politely telling her to get out.
"Thanks." I said as he closed the door. I sighed, going back to the task at hand. "Should I just tell you?"
Steve shook his head impatiently, "Just tell us already!"
"Johnny, Pony," I looked at the two, both standing to the left of my bed. "You guys remember that night Ponyboy was going to run away with Johnny before I stopped you guys?"
They both nodded.
"I stopped you guys from-"
"What so you can tell the future?" Steve interrupted.
"Shut up. Anyways, well..." I ran my hand through my hair. "Johnny and Dally die."
"WHAT?!" The room erupted with noise, and Johnny turned snow-white.
"I stopped it though! It didn't happen!" I tried to get everyone to calm down. "Johnny and Pone saved kids from burning in that church! Johnny got burned real bad..." Tears welled in my eyes, remembering the movie. I stuttered, "When Johnny died in the hospital" I sniffled and wiped a tear streaming down my face, "Dal went on a suicide mission. He couldn't take it. He robbed a store, and, and..."
"Y/N, calm down." Darry told me, sitting on the bed.
"Gosh, I'm only seventeen! I can't handle anything anymore. I'm not even from here, you know that? I'm not even from here..."
Sodapop squinted, "What do you mean, Y/N?"
"I'm not from nineteen sixty seven."
Steve laughed, "So you're from the future?" I looked up at him, serious face, making him shut up immediately and turn pale.
"You're from the future?" Sodapop whispered.
"Holy crap." Two-Bit muttered. "Wait, how do we know you're not lying?"
"What the heck, Two-Bit?" Sodapop yelled. "Look at her! You think she's crying just to have some fun and make a scene?!"
"Pony wrote a book." I said. "I come from a different... dimension? Universe? World?" I thought about it for a second, "We're in a book."
Steve went over to my table, grabbed the glass of table on my bedside and spraying it out of his mouth purposefully. He swore afterwards, multiple times.
"'The Outsiders' is a book, written by S.E. Hinton, in the perspective of Ponyboy. It's about everything that was supposed to happen." That felt good to get it off my chest. "Oh, and I'm from fifty years in the future."
Steve repeated his previous actions, although this time choking on the water.
'That's it, I think." I whispered, trying to find any other secrets I might have been keeping for more than three years.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Johnny questioned.
"I didn't want it to ruin everything, but nevermind..." I spoke loud enough so he could hear me over the commotion of the room. Johnny leaned in and hugged me, leaving me surprised.
"What are you doing?" I asked, my face still red, wet with tears. "I didn't do anything for you Johnny. You're parents are still abusing you, and I messed up everything anyways." I sobbed, "I'm so sorry, Johnny. You died a hero."
"Yeah, but Dally's alive." A tear rolled down his soft cheek.
