Because he's Batman

"I'll see you again someday Kaldur." I said as I passed him. "I'm counting on it." He smiled and began fighting Hawkman again. Superboy, M'gann and Kaldur did their job. Soon we were on our way to the rendezvous point.

"Guys, I'm not sure I'm worth all this." I said. "Don't say that." Robin said. "We'll always have your back Vertis. No matter what." Roy said. I smiled half-heartedly. "Yeah." I sighed. After a while I fell asleep and later was woken up.

"We're here." Roy said and dismounted the jet. I followed him and shivered at the cold. In front of me was a small cabin looking building with light coming from the windows. It was surrounded by trees and snow.

"I assume we are in a forest?" I said. "Assumption correct." Roy said and I followed him and Dick into the cabin. Once I entered I was immediately hit with a wave of warmth. I took off my snow covered boots and put them by the door.

Wally and Artemis came into the room and I was enveloped into a hug. "Did you have any trouble on your way here?" Artemis asked us. "No. You?" Robin responded. "Nah man." Wally said and lead us to the kitchen where they had made pasta. "Is this food that Wally actually made?" Roy asked looking at it suspiciously. "Yep!" Wally said proudly. "It really is the end of times." I said laughing lightly.

"Wally stop lying. I made most of it. If I hadn't Wally would've found some way to set the pan on fire." Artemis joked. "Aww come on Artemis stop being so mean!" Wally complained and leaning on the stove which resulted in him yelping in pain as the pot burned him.

We all laughed until my face fell into a frown "I wish that the rest of the team was here." I said looking down. "Me too." Robin said putting his hand on my back. I sighed at looked outside. The sun had come up and was bathing the treetops in a beautiful amber. "Where are we?" I asked. "Alaska." Robin responded. I nodded and continued to stare at the forest that surrounded us.

"So how did you guys know about this place?" I asked, turning away from the window. "Past mission. We rested here after a particularly nasty fight with Captain Cold." Wally explained. I nodded in understanding.

"I downloaded the files that we needed from the bat computer and put all of the information on a hard drive." Robin said taking out a small hard drive and connecting it to his wrist computer.

"I was thinking. What if the gun didn't disintegrate. Manta's gun transferred Vertis and I to a different dimension-" Wally cut Robin off. "So that gun could have done something similar if not the same thing to Batman." He finished. My heartbeat quickened. Batman could be alive. Bruce could be alive!

"We need to find that gun and scan it for any readings that make it similar to Manta's portal gun." Artemis said and even though I was used to it by now I flinched at the word 'Manta.' Robin noticed and gave me an apologetic look. I shook my head at him saying that I was fine and he gave me a look that said 'we will talk later.'

"Well how do we find that gun?" I asked, joining the conversation. "Simple. Joker likes to show things off. Likes to make a scene. With Batman gone he thinks he can get away with that. All we have to do is find Joker." Robin answered. "And the gun will probably be somewhere nearby." Roy added on. "Precisely." Robin said snapping his fingers.

"So basically we just wait for the Joker to show his ugly face and then snap, we got him?" Artemis confirms. "Yep." Wally responded. "Vertis." Robin walked out of the room and beckoned for me to follow him. I exited the room and stood in the hallway face-to-face with him.

"What is up? You're wanted by the justice league and I can tell that you are trying to keep yourself together for our sake but please, it's not bad to show the team some vulnerability." Robin said to me and I scoffed. "Like you do?" I shot back.

"I don't want to argue with you I'm just saying that if you show emotion no one will look at you differently." Robin lectured me. "Was that what you were afraid of?" I asked quietly. "Yeah. I was mostly afraid that the team would see me break down once and the treat me like broken glass but I told them how I felt and they understood. Like everyone here will if you just show a little emotion. If you show that you're still alive on the inside." Robin voice hot quieter and my lip trembled.

"I just want Batman back." I whispered. Since I had basically no father and my mother was all the way in Atlantis Batman was my father figure. He showed me the side of him that Dick saw and I loved him for that. "And he worse part, is that it's my fault he's gone in the first place." I said tears finally leaking out of my eyes. "It's not your fault. It's the Joker's. Did you pull the trigger when he was hit you the gun?Did you tell him to save you? No, But he did it anyway." Robin paused and hugged me. The tears rushing down my face.

"He did it because he's Batman and that what he does. He saves people or dies doing it." I took a shaky breath. "Because he's Batman." I repeated half smiling through my watery eyes.

I pulled out of the hug and instantly missed Robin's warmth. "Thanks." I said looking at him. "Anytime." He responded. I then realized how close we were. My nose was barely brushing his. He looked me in the eyes and slowly leaned forward. I leaned forward as well and our lips met in the center. I smiled into the kiss and Dick smiled back.

His skin was soft against my tough metal and his ebony hair felt like clouds. Soon we were smiling so hard we couldn't kiss anymore. I laughed a little bit and buried my head into his chest. "I'll always be there for you. Though the good or bad." Robin promised and I nodded. "Ditto." Was all I said and Robin pushed my face away from his chest so that he could look at me.

"Really? Ditto? You completely ruined the moment!" Dick fake complained. "Well I'm sorry Mister Romance. What was I supposed to say?" I asked raising an eyebrow. "I don't know. Something like you. Beautiful." Robin said. I slapped his chest. "You're so cheesy." I said.

"Did you kiss yet?" Wally's voice could be heard and we a fit of laugher erupted from the kitchen and another yelp. "For gods sakes Wally stop burning yourself!" Artemis yelled and it was our turn to burst into a fit of giggles.

I sighed. "Why is the justice league trying to kill me?" I asked out of the blue. "I don't know Vertis. I really don't know." Was all Dick said.
