"His artwork is pretty dark." Matthew said the moment Lars pulled him out of bed the next morning.
"Good morning to you as well." Lars rolled his eyes softly. "That's just his style. I thought it would fit the mood of your story."
"The novel wasn't that dark...was it?"
"Just try reading it again when you're in a better place and ask me that again."
Matthew groaned. "I need a dart."
"Peter is still here."
"Yeah. But he's sleeping and I told him he couldn't go to the attic." The Canadian crawled out of bed and grabbed his glasses off his nightstand. A small white fluff emerged from the sheets, yawning softly.
"He sleeps with you now?" The Dutchman said, surprised.
"Yeah. I have to keep him in my room cuz I don't know how he is around kids."
"Has he gone out?"
"He has a litter box."
"He's a polar bear..."
"It's a big litter box."
"I need a smoke too."
"Follow me."
The pair eased up the stairs and into the first room on the right. There were two rooms upstairs. The first was just a storage room. But the second, the one they were entering, was Matthew's man-cave.
And also where he grew his pot plants.
Said plants were sitting under a light in the corner of the room. The rest of the space in the area was taken up by two couches. A coffee table with the tray he used to roll joints, and an old guitar in the corner on its stand. There were a few things here and there; a Canadian flag hanging from the ceiling with a weed leaf instead of a maple, a pinup calendar full of bikini models that had been there since he moved in, and a soft rug made out of synthetic fur. There was a burn in the corner of it from a particularly bad day, but the rest of it was so plush you could sleep on it.
"Do you have your own or do you want some of mine?" Matthew asked, sitting on one of the couches.
Lars sat on the other, pulling something from his pocket. "I got some of that good strain you wanted to try."
"I think I love you." Matthew held out his hand for the tiny Baggie which Lars dropped into his palm.
He popped a tiny bit into the Dutchman's pipe before getting his papers ready to roll up a fatty.
"I don't really have much of a place for him to sleep." The Canadian admitted.
"Who? Gilbert?"
"Yeah."
"He's fine on the couch. Trust me."
"I just want to be courteous. Where's he from, by the way?"
"Eastern Germany." Lars replied smoothly. He took a long haul from his pipe and blew it into the air. "His parents met when the Berlin Wall fell."
"Is he a goth?"
"What makes you think that?"
"His drawings..."
"He's not a goth."
"Then what is he? What typical High school movie character would he be?"
"I don't know. The popular guy? The bad boy? I don't know him that well. It's only the professional stuff."
Matthew finished rolling his joint and lit it, sucking in the flavour like a hoe on Friday night.
The two sat in silence after that. There wasn't much left for them to say to each other. They just laid back and enjoyed their high.
"I think Peter is up." Lars said after a while.
"Shit." Matthew groaned. "Looks like the fun is over then."

Canada is the #1 producer of Canabis in the world. And it's not even legal here!
It is supposed to be done by July 1st of 2018, though. Fingers crossed.
