One morning during breakfast, Sylvia announced that she....even though she was in fourth grade, was going to be a paramedic! Jimmy and I were excited for her! "That's amazing, sweet pea!" I exclaimed, happily. "Remember that it takes perseverance, strength, and determination...and much more than that." Jimmy reminded her. Sylvia smiled and said, "I know. Thanks Mom, thanks Dad!" as she got ready for school. Jimmy looked at me and said, "We have a determined young lady, don't we, dear?" I nodded and said, "Yep." I heard the school bus coming towards our house and I called Sylvia down, "Sylvia Grace! You'd better get your patootie down here! The bus is coming!" "Okay Mom!" She called back. She rushed downstairs, kissed us goodbye, and rushed out the door. "Our baby is growing up." I remarked as Jimmy hugged me. He kissed my head and said, "She sure is. It's time for us to get going too." I chuckled and said, "Alright." Then we headed to 51.
Two hours later, we responded to another dual-car crash, this time on another highway. PD was already directing traffic. Cruz, Otis, and Hermann worked on one car and Severide, Casey, and I worked on the other. As we were getting the victims out, I smelled gasoline....then saw it dripping from the bottom of the vehicle. Unfortunately for us, the wind was slightly blowing....which would cause a fire if we didn't get the last victim out, a fifteen year old girl whose leg was stuck between a backseat and a door which was jammed in. "Get me out!" she cried. "We're trying, sweetheart!" I assured her as I tried to get the door off of her leg. I already smelled smoke. I worked faster, yet cautiously. I finally got the door off her leg. I yelled for Casey to help me get her out and he did. We ran out of the way, carrying the girl, just as the car burst into flames. We helped her get on the stretcher and Gabby and Jimmy took over. "Close call." I told Casey. "Yep." He replied.
