The next day, I signed an approval form for me, Jimmy, Hermann, Casey, Severide, and Gabby to go to Sylvia's school for Career Day that would be held in the gymnasium and we headed there.
Once we parked, headed in, got visitor ID passes, and arrived at the gymnasium, we waited for our turn to speak. Three minutes later, it was our turn. We introduced ourselves and explained what we do. I saw a boy sitting in front of Sylvia raise his hand. "Yes sir? What's your name and question?" I asked. "My name is Troy and my question is, do you guys rescue animals too?" the boy asked. I smiled and said, "Sometimes we do. One time, we rescued a horse from the river." The kids were impressed. We answered more questions, including one from Sylvia. There was one question from another girl sitting amongst the crowd that hit home, "My name is Grace. My question is....did you ever rescue a loved one?" Taking a deep breath, I replied, "Yes. Several times." "Were you scared?" Grace asked. "Yes, but I knew somehow that they would be okay." I replied. Hermann lightened the mood by telling funny rescue stories. Next thing I know, our turn was up.... and our pagers went off. We thanked everyone and left.
We responded to a small house fire and got to work. While we were getting people out, Severide asked, "You okay? About that question this morning at Career Day?" I replied, "Yes. It just hit home, though. You know?" He understood. Two hours later, the fire was out, we cleared some debris, and went back to the station.
