While I was at work...and Mrs. Hermann watched the twins, the alarm went off. A sudden feeling of fear washed over me as I heard the name of Sylvia's school and what happened....."Child Seizure". As we rushed to the school, Hermann put his arm around my neck and told me, "We know what to do, whether it's Sylvia or not. Caroline, she'll be alright either way." I took a deep breath and said, "I hope so. I do know, though. That the nurse knows what to do too." A minute later, we arrived at the school. I hopped out and rushed to where she was, I yelled to Gabby and Jimmy, "Hurry! Get the gurney and the kit!" I found her, on the floor of the gymnasium...in her PE uniform, having another seizure. I knelt beside her and asked the PE teacher to get the rest of the kids out of the room. "Sylvia? It's Mama. Can you hear me?" I asked her, hoping she'll wake up at the sound of my voice. She stopped breathing. I performed CPR until Gabby and Jimmy arrived. "We'll take over, Caroline." Jimmy said. I let them do what they had to do to revive her. I stayed kneeling beside her. An hour later, she woke up, "Mom? Dad?" "We and Aunt Gabby are here, sweetheart." I told her as they lifted her onto the gurney, strapped her in, and I held her hand until they lifted her into the ambulance. She was alert and awake. I blew a kiss to her, closed the ambulance doors, and off they went. The rest of us went back to the station.
When we got back, I totally lost it in the locker room. I bawled, I prayed, I yelled, and I fell on my knees and cried more. I was a mess. I heard the ambulance pull in. Jimmy must have heard me, because he walked in and sat beside me. I leaned into his arms, wiped my tears, and asked, "What are we going to do?" Jimmy hugged me and said, "Keep praying. We're not going to give up on her or the twins." "You're right, baby....you're absolutely right." I replied. Once we got off work, Jimmy and I drove to the hospital to see Sylvia and to take shifts being with her. She had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. She had two more seizures in the hospital. I stayed by her through those seizures and after. Halstead switched and put her on a medication that will stop her seizures and help her function. One night, when Sylvia and I were taking a nap, I heard a knock on the door. I looked up and saw Severide and Stella. "Come in." I greeted them, stretching. "How is she?" Stella asked. "She's a little better. Halstead put her on a medication that will end her seizures and help her function better. I'm still worried about her." I replied. Stella and Severide sat down on either side of me and comforted me. We kept vigil until she woke up, "Hi Mama...Severide...Stella." We breathed a sigh of relief. "Hi sweetheart. How are you doing?" I said. "I'm doing good." She replied. Severide got up to buy Sylvia some flowers from the hospital gift shop and came back shortly. "Thank you!" She told Severide. "You're welcome, sweetie." He replied. I told Sylvia that I promised her that she would get through this.
Two weeks later, she was back home, but she had to stay from school for another two weeks to adjust to her medicine. I stayed home with her and the twins.
