One morning, when Jimmy and I were feeding the twins, Sylvia came up to us and excitedly told us, "I get to go to the medical school at Med with the middle schoolers today!" Jimmy and I lit up and said, "That's an amazing opportunity!" We laughed. "It sure is. I'm so excited! Guess who's going to teach us?" Sylvia replied. "Who?" I asked, clearly happy for her. "Dr. Charles, Dr. Reese, and Dr. Latham!" She announced. We talked excitedly more about it until it the school bus came. Sylvia kissed us and the twins goodbye and rushed out of the door. I saw that the twins knew that we were happy, so they were happy. I looked at the wall clock, "Oh my god. Honey, we have to call Mrs. Hermann and go. We're going to be late!" I called Mrs. Hermann, who came over shortly after the call. We thanked her and drove each of our cars to work.
Hermann and I were playing ping pong in the breakroom when the alarm went off. As we were suiting up, I told him about Sylvia's opportunity and he replied, "That's amazing! I'm proud of her!" "Me too." I said as we got in the truck and rushed to the scene, which was a vehicle rollover. We hopped out of the truck and rushed to help. When we got to the car, I bent down and saw a middle aged woman in the driver's seat, who was conscious and crying, a young boy unconscious, but breathing in the backseat, and a middle aged man in the passenger seat, unconscious and not breathing. "Gabby! Call for a second ambulance! Heck, make that a third!" I yelled. Jimmy and Sylvia came with a stretcher and got the woman out. "What happened?" I asked her. The woman told us that they were heading out of town for a vacation when the man had a heart attack and leaned over towards her, causing her to swerve and roll over. "Will my son and my husband be okay?" She tearfully and fearfully asked us. I sighed and said, "Either way, they'll be alright." A few minutes later, the woman , her son, and her husband were taken to Med in separate ambulances. "I hope they'll be alright." I told Hermann and Severide. "I hope so too." Severide said.
An hour later, we were waiting in the breakroom to hear from Med about the rollover victims. We all prayed for them silently and sat and waited in silence, until Boden came in, sighed, and told us, "Halstead called. He said that.....that the father died on arrival. The mother and son are fine, but they'll need a lot of support and prayer." There wasn't a dry eye in the room. That's how much we care for those who we rescue as well as those we don't rescue. After a moment of crying and sobbing, Boden walked up and sat next to me and said, "Sylvia was chosen to help with the son. She did a great job." I cried more, happy tears this time, "I'm so thankful to have her.... and that she's overcome so much." I said, wiping tears from my eyes. "She has a bright future." Boden said, smiling. I laughed and said, "She sure does. I don't know what the future holds for the twins yet, but I hope that they have a bright future too." "They will," Hermann assured me, "All three of my godkids will." We laughed.
After Jimmy and my shifts, we went home and relieved Mrs. Hermann. I hugged her and told her, "Thank you for everything and for you and Chris being our guides here in Chicago. Y'all are angels!" "You're welcome, sweetie." She replied, "I'm more than happy to help...always." "Hey, why don't you, Chris, and the kids come over sometime for dinner?" I suggested. "That would be great. We would love to!" Mrs. Hermann replied, happily. I told her that I would make a good Creole meal of red beans and rice. "That sounds delightful!" She replied. We talked more until she had to get home. We hugged and told each other goodbye then we all went on with our night.
