Sometime after chapter 11. Chrom

"Anna?" I awoke in the middle of the night, the space where Anna occupied was empty.

"Anna, are you in here?" I asked again, hoping for an answer.

It was quiet.

I got out of bed and tried searching for her. She wasn't in the washroom. Not in our study. Nowhere to be found.

I sighed and looked at the clock. 11:34 PM... What the heck would she be up for?

...Wait a minute...

I chuckled lightly and returned to the main area of our room. I quickly threw my robe over my shoulders and put on my slippers. I know exactly where you are, tactician...

I exited our bedroom and made my way to the central hallway.

Just as I had predicted, I heard the clanging of pots and pans from inside of the kitchens. I opened the door and saw who I was looking for.

"Knew I'd find you in here,"

Anna jumped at the sound of my voice and turned to face me. She was still wearing her blue nightgown, and her hair was in a messy ponytail. She was covered in ingredients, cake batter, and frosting.

"Chrom! What are you doing here?! I thought you'd be asleep!" she exclaimed.

I sighed and walked over to her. "I would ask the same about you," I said, removing an eggshell from her hair. I looked around and saw that she was trying to bake a cake, the cookbook dully lit by a gas lantern. "It's a bit late for cake cravings, is it not?"

Anna blushed and turned her face away from me. "No... I wasn't making it for myself... I was hoping to surprise you with it for your birthday..."

"Oh, Anna..." I leaned over and wrapped an arm around her. "You don't have to do that when it's close to midnight. Besides, it's not much of a surprise anymore, is it?"

"Grr! It would've been a surprise if you didn't barge in on me!" she pouted. "How did you know I was gone, anyways?"

I sighed and pulled her closer. "I know we've only been married for a couple weeks, but I think I know your routine by now," I said. "If you're going to be up for a long period of time, you would have told me or left a note."

"You got me there..." she whispered. "I'm sorry I snuck out. I just wanted to surprise you, that's all..."

"...By making me a birthday cake at midnight?"

"Don't question my logic. I was excited!"

I laughed and released her, taking a look at the damage done to the kitchens. Due to the lack of light and Anna's habits of being a messy baker, there was a large mess. Eggs, flour, sugar, and any other ingredient found in a cake was scattered everywhere. A large glass bowl containing chocolate cake batter sat before us and was quite intact.

I dipped my finger into it and tasted it. The chocolaty flavor spread throughout my tongue and made me smile. "It tastes good, at least."

Anna rolled her eyes at me. "Well, thanks...it was your cake after all..."

I frowned and took her into my arms once more. "Anna, I'm truly sorry about ruining your surprise for me. I really am. But I was really worried about you. I don't like it when you disappear on me," I kissed her forehead.

She sighed and hugged me back. "I know... And I'm sorry, too... I just wanted to surprise you, but I never stopped to consider how you would feel about my absence if you woke up..." she sighed.

I smiled at her. "It's alright, my love," I said. "I'm the only one who needs to apologize..."

Anna giggled lightly and snuggled back into me. "Well, you are forgiven. But only because you're so cute!"

"Haha...of course..."

Just then, we hear the bonging of the grandfather clock go off. It's midnight.

Anna looked to me and smiled. "Happy birthday, Chrom..."

I smiled back. "Thank you, Anna...you've already made this the best birthday a man could hope for..."

I pressed my lips against hers, and the kiss tasted like chocolate.
