Q: Kailangan ba ng ISBN kung magse-self-pub ng book?
A: Depende. Ibebenta mo ba yung self-pub book mo sa bookstore?
Ang ISBN (google it na lang for more info!) ay hindi required kung PRIVATE DISTRIBUTION lang ang libro mo. Hindi ako kumukuha ng ISBN para sa mga SELF-PUBLISHED PHILIPPINE PRINT EDITIONS ko, kasi mga kaibigan at loyal readers ko lang naman ang umo-order. Hindi ko siya binebenta sa mga bookstore.
Pero kung gusto mong mag-consign sa bookstore, meaning ipapabenta mo sa bookstore yung libro mo, kailangan mo ng ISBN usually kasi kasama sa requirements nila yon.
Ang ISBN ay nabibili from the NATIONAL LIBRARY, pero dapat ay REGISTERED COMPANY ka. May listahan sila ng requirements at kasama doon ay ang DTI/SEC registration ng publishing company mo.
As I said, my SELF-PUBLISHED PHILIPPINE PRINT EDITIONS do not have ISBN.
My SUMMIT EDITION PAPERBACKS have ISBN (kasi may publisher na nag-apply for the ISBN at binebenta sila sa bookstore).
My Amazon ebooks DO NOT HAVE ISBN. (Because Amazon does not require it.)
My iTunes, Barnes and Noble, and Kobo ebooks HAVE ISBN. (Because they require it.)
My SELF-PUBLISHED INTERNATIONAL PRINT EDITIONS have ISBN. (Because US, UK etc require it.)
You CANNOT USE THE SAME ISBN for ebook and print editions.
My SUMMIT EDITIONS and INTERNATIONAL EDITIONS have different ISBNS because they are different editions and have different publishers.
Sorry kung nakakalito. It's not the most efficient system as it is.
Short answer: Hindi required ang ISBN sa pag-publish ng libro, pero depende sa kung saan at paano mo ibebenta ang libro mo, baka required ang ISBN. Pero as a self-publisher, makakakuha ka lang ng ISBN kung registered company ka.
