Remember where it all started? A young gray pegasus betrayed, forgotten, abandoned, left in the cold to die. Sound familiar?
...yes. Then I was found and brought inside, saved and... cared for.
Back then, the orphanage counselor was my only mother. She behaved like one. She watched over her children and taught them manners. Oh how I wish she was my real mother. Its always been her that brought happiness to the children she took as her own. How can I forget those kind caramel rich eyes, the golden shiny coat, a curly mane style with two strands of the colors chocolate brown and egg white.
The name...
Her cutie mark I recall was a cloud or whip cream with pieces of candy on it. Wait, it was a dream cloud... yes. "Sweet Dreams" was her name. And that cutie mark spoke so truly about her. She was such a loving unicorn to all of us.
In that orphanage, no child was ignored, uncared for, bullied or forgotten. We were all her children. And that made the kids my brothers and sisters. Gosh we must have been more than a hoof full. Heh. Though Sweet Dreams was the strongest pony we knew.
At night, she would read us all bedtime stories. Not one at a time. All at once. This one story, if I remember correctly, was about a young boy who battled his fears to reach home. He had ran into monsters that tried to harm him, voices that tried to mislead the kid and make him do what they want, and finally he cheated death. Hearing this story, made me feel strong and motivated me to be just like him. Nightmares would never haunt me.
Now i must remind you, myself, the... nightmares? That I saw in my youth.
It was about... midnight. Sometime past bedtime when I woke up. I could not sleep after seeing... what was it that I saw? ...Some sort of... darkness? A dark pegasus figure, a pony with red circles around his eyes and a thick red line going down from his chin and under him. His hooves were dyed in a red flame pattern and his pupils were small white lights. Though, seeing him in the darkness, he was not aggressive or scary. Just... surprising to look at.
Awake now, I heard soft voices in the hallways and saw a dim light sway down the hall away from the huge bedroom I slept in with the other children. Getting out of bed, my curiosity told me to follow for two reasons: I wonder what they're talking about and I want to ask Sweet Dreams to help me fall asleep again. Maybe a glass of milk or perhaps a quiet lullaby from her would help me sleep again. She did have a heavenly voice. Following, I get closer and closer until the voices become understandable words.
"Listen I do appreciate the offer but I refuse to hand off the orphanage. The children here would be devastated by such a change."
"I assure you they would be fine. They are full of potential like Sweet Dreams told me. I'm sure they will be able to adapt. Besides, do you have enough money in the budget for their education?"
"Well..."
Peeking around the corner to see the two, I look at the earth pony, the founder of the orphanage, Mrs Union. The earth pony beside her... well... I didn't really have a good feeling about him. Like a sixth sense was telling me something bad was coming.
"Mrs Union. I can help fund your orphanage, all I ask is to make a few changes which we can discuss later."
Looking closely at this stallion, he looked quite wealthy, wearing a white business shirt, black vest and red tie along with dark blue pants. His coat was a cream color and his dark brown mane was quite well done like a bachelor's haircut.
"Shall we take this to your office?"
With a nod, they continued down the hall towards the main office. I stayed a bit behind so they would not see me. Although they did not spot me as they went into the office, Sweet Dreams did.
"Hector? What are you doing up this late?"
I was not focusing on the light coming up behind me and Sweet Dreams speaking to me. I got startled and turned to face her, my pegasus wings opening as if getting ready to fly. Though I couldn't at the time.
"Oh... I... couldn't sleep. I had a... dream"
"A bad one?"
"Well... it wasn't bad but it was not good either."
Sweet Dreams nodded. "Lets get you back to bed."
Offering her hoof, I take a light hold of it and follow her back to the orphanage bedroom. Once I got to my bed, she tucked me in and gave me a good night kiss on my forehead.
"Good night Hector"
"Good night mom"
The words came out naturally as if it was a common sentence. Sweet Dreams smiled and started walking out. My eyes slowly closed as I watched the light fade away down the hall. Laying there for a short moment, I fell asleep.
There he was again, standing silent in the shadows as he looked over at me. His eyes were dark and only a single pair of small white lights were seen in his eyes. A smokey aura emitted off of him as he stared. He didn't move or even blink, he was as still as a statue.
"Who... who are you?" I said to break the silence. Still... no answer. He just stared me down with a normal smile and wide open eyes.
For a long time, we just stared eye to eye. I kept trying to figure him out as we both looked at each other.
"...one..." he spoke. "One...day"
I took a step closer.
"...we will meet..."
I stayed quiet for a moment to see if he had anymore to say. Nothing. I was about to speak but was stopped I was woken by a light shake as one of the orphanage children woke me up for breakfast. Quickly as I could, I stretched to wake up my body and I jumped out of bed. Running to the kitchen with those words stuck in my head. "One day we will meet"
Two weeks later The Orphanage got a more educational side to it. We now wake up and go to school. The school house is mostly composed of orphans, me included. Though lately, for some reason, non orphan students have been part of the program. I have nothing against that but... I have a bad feeling. There are these two students: Stardom and Roughhouser. They are the sons of Long Green who was the stallion who set up the education program for the orphanage. The two seemed friendly enough. Though something deep inside doesn't feel right about them. Just... i dont know.
Today I got to meet them. They were playing a game called "Four Square". Of course I didn't know the rules as I never played it before. Looked fun. I went and asked in a somewhat shy tone if I could join them. The two chuckled and nodded, inviting me to play. The fourth filly in the game, her name was Assuage. The name was not to my knowledge until Roughhouser called out her name. A golden coat mare whose red mane was held into a bun with a lump of hair covering half her face and her same colored tail was more of a spikey curved fashion. Looking at her hooves, she had a red fiery pattern. She wore red oval glasses that fit perfectly on her snout and those green eyes looked over into mine.
"You joining in?" Roughhouser asked me.
"Yes, teach me how to play"
And so they did. The ball hits your square and you have to hit it into somebody else's without touching the ball twice or letting it bounce twice in your square. Also it has to land in your box before you can hit it, if it bounces twice in your square, game over for you. Of course, noobie here, I did not learn immediately but did do well a bit before being out.
The day went on with sharing classes here and there with the gang. Some classes had a combination of the three with me. Mostly, I found myself near or with Assuage. Just us, we were top in our classes. With the whole group, don't mess with us. Being with the group and my family, I felt so happy. I lived wonderfully and enjoyed young years with my friends.
Though good things never last forever. There's still the day where everything changed.
