"Lexi! Your friend is at the door!" I heard my mum shout after the door lock clicked.
"Is it Robyn? If so, then tell her that she really doesn't need to check on me every five minutes and that one missed phone call doesn't mean anything," I yelled back, not looking away from the TV screen, which I was avidly trying to complete a level of Super Mario Galaxy on. My friends had felt the need to check on me literally every minute of the day since I tried to take the pills, and although I tried to assure them that I was fine for now, that I was completely happy, they still proceeded to take shifts in bombarding me with phone calls and texts.
According to them, they weren't willing to take the risk of letting me attempt to kill myself.
I hadn't recently, but when I pointed out that I could always lie to them so they might as well set guard dogs on me (to dissaude them for spamming me up with calls and texts), they got even more worried and changed the check-up time from half an hour to fifteen minutes. Their timetable now showed that from seven o' clock, Lucas would check-up on me for the whole morning, Robyn checking up in the afternoon, Holly in the evening, and Thomas from nine o' clock to eleven o' clock, and between the hours that 'normal people
It was pretty ridiculous, and that afternoon, I had gone to the kitchen to eat a banana to come back and find that I had missed a phone call.
I was pretty sure Robyn would be already on the bus to my house by now, so I decided to just relax and wait for her wrath.
But then my mum surprised me by saying, "It's not Holly!"
"I said Robyn, not Holly." Of course, Robyn could always send her twin instead of herself.
"It's..." my mum paused and I heard her ask someone else, "what's your name, sweetie? Mikayla!"
I dropped my game controller in surprise, letting a tortoise kill Mario, and stood up, picking up my crutches from beside me to hop to the front door. Why was Miki here?
"Lexi!" Miki beamed when I came out of the living room and saw my friend, who I had really only known for around two weeks, but we had been talking over the Internet for months. Miki glanced up at my mother for confirmation that she could come in, and when my mum nodded, Miki wrapped me in a hug.
"You okay?" Miki asked, her mouth muffled by my cardigan.
I pulled away from her. "Yeah, I guess." I mean, compared to a few days ago, yes, I was a lot better. But compared to normal, not-so-crazy people, I was still a wreck. I was still crying myself to sleep, I was still frantically scanning the room for metal blades that I could use just in case, I was still weighing the pros and cons of death, but this was a happy break for me.
I was improving. At least I could enjoy myself right now without Levi being a jerk and people at school being his minions, seeing as we got let off school for Christmas.
As far as I was concerned? I was okay for now. And also, I didn't want another person monitoring me all day and all night.
Miki grinned at me, and I smiled back. I was getting so used to faking them that the line between a real one and a fake one was a little blurred, but I was sure it was a real one this time.
Miki shivered and hopped around on her feet, yet she didn't close the door and we were still standing strangely in the entrance.
"Miki, you can come in you know," I said, breaking the silence.
Miki shrugged. "Nah, but do you want to go on a walk?"
"A walk? But it's freezing outside! And I've sprained my ankle!" So far, I had been spending these days doing pretty much nothing while sitting against the radiator in an attempt to warm up. The weather forecast had been saying it was about to snow in about three days; therefore I wasn't particularly a fan of going into the frosty cold.
