The week passed by and as usual, it was uneventful. The weekend came and Cathy made plans to just spend the day in her room and fool around with her piano.
Meanwhile, Ashton and his friends were fooling around in his car and jamming to whatever music was playing and driving to the town mall just for the heck of it. From the driver's seat, Ashton suddenly spoke up,
"How about we'd go and try to hang out with that Cathy girl?"
"Who?" The purple haired boy, Michael asked innocently while raising his eyebrows to the mention of the somewhat familiar name.
"Is that the quiet girl from class? Why are you suddenly bringing her up? She's kind of weird." a deep voice from the backseat spoke up, which belonged to Luke.
Michael suddenly remembered her, replying with a shrug.
"I think Ashton likes her" Calum, the boy in the front seat teased.
"Shut up you guys. We should at least make friends with her. I mean..." Ashton tried to speak but his words only came out in mumbles and stutters.
Ashton actually did think that she was pretty, but not exactly drop dead gorgeous. She was alright. There was just something about her that intrigued him so much that he wanted to know. There was this part of Cathy that was hidden. Being his curious and nosy self, he decided that he will try to know what her secret was. After all, he was Ashton Irwin.
"Well he is right guys. After all, I don't think she has any friends. We should at least try. Being part of the student council and all." Luke suggested.
Mutters of 'okays' and 'alrights' came in with the music filling the car.
At the same time, Cathy was picking on the nearby flowers and letting her thoughts go by. The day was going by very slowly and she was getting extremely bored, just like her usual weekends. She never went out. She didn't need to since she just wanted to be by herself, though friends would be good to have.
Cathy had already stopped wondering on why she never had any friends. No matter how much she thought about it, it wouldn't come to mind on the reason why people tend to ignore her. She was sure there was nothing wrong with her clothes or how she looked, at least she thought. She was simple with her T-shirts and jeans. unlike the girls at her school that wear everything in magazines or the most expensive brands ever heard of. There wasn't anything wrong with her hygiene for sure. There was just something in today's society, she thought, that had something wrong with how they see.
These thoughts were cut off by a honking of a horn nearby.
"Cathy!" Ashton's familiar voice called out. It was only the second time she's heard him say her name, but she could listen to it forever.
She looked up from the ground to see a group of four boys in a car, gesturing for her to come in. Confused, she stood up from where she sat a little too quickly, making her head spin. She wobbled a bit, but recovered immediately.
She jogged toward the car with the four boys and asked them,
"Are you guys lost?"
Since they never got to this part in town, and they're usually driving to more exciting places, it was strange to see them in a small neighborhood and honking a car in front of the girl-that-never-gets-noticed-at-all's house.
"No, uhh... err actually we just ummm" Ashton fiddled with his fingers on the steering wheel, not finding the words to say.
How am I supposed to make friends again? He thought to himself. Ashton you tiny brained little moron.
While having his internal war with himself, Michael covered up for Ashton, his head popping out from the back of the car.
"We just thought that you might want to hang out with us, as a thank you for that article you wrote. We were supposed to do it ourselves, the coach being his usual dick-like self, when he knew that we can't write anything other than our names." The purple-headed-furby-like-hair-styled boy filled in for his friend.
"Now?" she seemed confused, since no one really said thank you or wanted to hang out. Maybe the last time was when she got invited to a tiny little tea party in kindergarten.
They actually notice me. She thought. They even remembered me. Well, we pretty much are in the same class every single year.
"If you want to." A big, friendly smile was flashed from another person in the backseat. Ashton was still awkwardly fumbling with his fingers on the steering wheel.
She nodded at them and got in the car, in between the two hyperactive boys in the back. She didn't care to ask permission from her mother, since Cathy and her mom already discussed that she would just allow her to go out anytime (this never happening since she didn't have any friends until now). She wasn't really sure why they wanted to hang out.
She wasn't completely convinced on their reason of wanting to thank her. It was just an article on the school paper anyway. Probably their coach wanted them to make that article a long time ago and if they didn't do it anytime sooner they'd be punished or something. I couldn't care less since I actually have acquaintances for at least a little while.
"So would you boys mind telling me where we're going?" She asked shyly.
