Chris greeted her kindly and explained that the trip was a little long. It'd take a little over three hours to get to their base in New York. The tip was easy and fairly quiet. They explained the days scedule.
1. They would drive to the location (the exact address was confidential)
2. She would be given her dorm and uniforms along with a schedule for the week.
3. The full group would go to the group training session.
4. She and Abe would go to the specialization training to see what all was similar and different between the two. After a while they arrived in the big city itself. They didn't travel the big streets but went around all the mayhem. Here there were staggered apartment buildings and suberbs, the roads were paved smoothly though and the sun had gradually come up.
Kate staff out the window in silence like most of the others did. Ave and Chris had ear buds and listened to whatever music was coming in through them. They were on a pretty barren road that was in the outskirts of a neiborhood. A sharp turn took the road into a dark tunnel lined only with a few lights, just enough to see the curvature of the road itself. Jazlen stopped the car and clicked a small button on the steering wheel.
A few of the lights beside me went out and she turned the car to where the wall should have been. Once we were all the way in the wall shut back up and it was utterly lightless. She could hear the others shuffleing around, putting their things away and unbuckling their seatbelts. Kate did the same and waited to see what happened next.
She felt like the car was moving though Jazlen had already cut the engine. In a couple of moments the room was filled with sold red light. She looked out the window and found that they were in a concrete parking garage.
"Come on Kate, I'm gonna go with you and get you signed in." Said Abe kindly from infront of her, climbing out of the car.
"Sounds good to me." She said opening the car door and stepping out with her bag. He frowned at the bag. Then held out a hand.
"I'll get that if you want." He said. She kindly refused and they went with the rest of the group to the elevators. They pressed a small round button and it lit up. They steped into the elevator moments later. It had twenty buttons, all numbered.Chris pressed thirteen and Abe pressed the twenty.
"The dorms are on thirteen, but we need to go to the lobby first," he explained. Jazlen offered to take her bag to the dorms, promising it was no trouble Kate thanked her and handed it to her, it wasn't heavy. They all got off and it was just she and Abe. She wondered why he was so nice, it felt off.
"You're really nice." She told him hoping he'd tell her why. He could read the uncertainty in her voice, she wondered why he was like that. He could read emotions well. For most people he could pick up exact thoughts, but not hers. He was intrieged.
"I've never met someone like myself before, sorry if you're weirded out..." He trailed off.
"Oh no its okay, font worry about it. It was a compliment," she said fearing that she'd hurt his feelings. She focused on him carefully, he was embarased. The elevator came to the top floor and they got off. She followed Abe as he lead her to the desk up front. He dug into his coat pocket and flashed a badge at the man running it.
"New recruit." He explained simply. The man nodded and reached under the desk. He pulled out a small packet of papers and handed them to Kate.
"Welcome, just fill this out and bring it back and we'll give you your badge." He smiled lamely for a split second and went back to his computer. She held it up and smiled brightly at Abe, he returned it weakly. She'd hurt his feelings and felt horrible about it. He saw that she felt bad and trued to brighten up for her.
"Here, we can go to that table over there and I'll help you fill it out." He said gesturing to a desk close by and trying to smile. He rubbed the back of his neck as she walked away. He followed her and stood beside the desk.Kate grabbed a pen and began to read parts if the packet. This was a lot to take in. After she read the full thing she signed it all off. She basically just said she swore secrecy and agreed to work for the government for life. It promised positions and good wages so she didn't have any problem with it. She went back to the desk and handed over the packet. The man that was there checked that she'd signed everything off and filed it away. He handed her a key and a small price of paper that he'd scribbled her dorm number and "permission to enter facilities" on and signed at the bottom.
She and Abe went back to the elevators.
"So what room did you get?" He asked still coming off embarased to her.
"I got room 137, but look there's no reason to be embarased, it was a compliment I promise." She smiled with the statement. He returned it for real this time.
"Looks like we're neighbors then, I'm in 136. And sorry for taking it wrong." He replied. They stepped off the elevator and into a nice looking hallway. The walls were creme colored and the floors were wooden. There were about ten doors and she walked to the seventh one with the number beside it "137" on a metal plate on the wall. Abe walked to the door beside her and opened it. He stood in the doorway.
"I'll let you get settled in, Jazlen's over in "133" when you want your bag." He gave her one last from and went inside, shutting the door behind him.Kate grinned to herself and let herself into he town room. Abe was nice. They all were. Well, not counting the one who's name she didn't know yet, she forgot to ask. What a shame, she'd worry about that later though.
