Cato's POV-
If my family could see me right now, then they would be so disappointed with me.
I was a trained killer, but I was trying to be friends with someone from District Twelve.
A no one that stood no chance of winning the games because I was the one that had been picked to lead the Careers against the other Tributes; it was my job to ensure that at least one of us won these Games.
When I first saw her, I was so confident that she was never going to get the sponsors that she needed but, seeing her in training has changed my mind - there is something about her which is hard not to love and I'm sure there was a lot more to her than meets the eye.
"Did you hear what I just said Cato?" Clove said, clicking her fingers in my face angrily.
"Huh? What?" I replied.
My thoughts got in the way of what we were talking about so, to be perfectly honest, I had no idea what they were saying to me just now.
In fact, I had no idea what they had just spent the last ten minutes saying to me because I was that zoned out.
"I said, Twelve is still our first target? Right?" Clove repeated.
"Erm, yeah, I suppose they are." I muttered, standing up from my seat and heading towards the elevator, in the hope that Katniss would be in the Training Centre again.
We weren't supposed to be down here without supervision, but no one bothered coming to get me yesterday, so I'm sure they won't care about me going down there again for a while this evening.
Besides, we only tomorrow to go and then we would be sent to the Arena anyway, so there was nothing they could do to me that was worse than sending me to my possible death.
"Where are you going?" Brutus asked me.
"Probably to play with Twelve again." Clove remarked.
"What? Have you really been playing with the enemy?" Brutus snapped at me, and he was actually pretty scary when he was in this type of mood; there was a reason he won his Games and it wasn't by playing nicely with the other Tributes.
"We're all enemies, even the Careers. What does it matter?" I questioned in annoyance.
If I was going to die being someone that I'm really not, then I might as well spend my last days alive being with someone that understood what it was like to pretend when, in reality, you just wanted to scream and shout about everything that was wrong.
"The Careers never go anywhere near the Tributes from the outlying Districts, they only hold you back." Enobaria joined in and it made me wonder if Katniss had also had the very same lecture about the Careers only wanting to kill her from her mentor.
"I've seen her in Training. She probably has more of a chance of killing you, than you do of killing her." Clove added with a smirk.
"Don't even question my strength. I will make sure one of us wins this thing and goes home the Victor." I snapped back at her and I noticed the smirk on her face growing bigger as the side of me which they all knew decided it was going to come out to play for a while.
"And there's the Cato we all know so well." Clove laughed before she walked away and vanished into her room at the other end of the corridor, in the room beside me where I could hear her screaming at night when she woke up from a nightmare where she left her family behind.
When she woke up from a nightmare where her family didn't care that she was dead because they never loved her anyway.
She doesn't think that I hear her, but I do and I know what her fears are.
"When Twelve find out you're only in this for yourself and no one else, I don't think she's going to want to talk to you very much. Do you?" Brutus questioned with a smirk on his face.
"Just leave me alone." I snapped and walked into the elevator, ignoring all the shouts that were coming after me from both Enobaria and Brutus; neither of them wanting me to spend any more time with Katniss than I already had done because it was bad for me.
I was supposed to be feared and showing people I was going to kill them the moment we set foot in that Arena, not attempting to make friends with a volunteer who was only going to end up dead anyway.
I stepped out of the elevator and into the Training Centre, the calm atmosphere forcing all the anger out of my body and immediately giving me a sense of peace; it was so much better being here when there was no one around compared to when the other twenty-three Tributes were here.
I didn't have to put on a show, and I didn't have to show them someone I wasn't. I could just be myself and there was no one here to tell me I was doing it wrong; just someone that could see right through me and knew me better than I even knew myself.
"What are you doing here? You know you're not supposed to be here after hours." Atala spoke harshly, and I guessed that someone must have told her I was going to be coming here since there was no such precautions last night when I just walked in here like I owned the place.
"Who told you I was coming down here then?" I asked her.
"That is none of your concern. The hours of the Training Centre are between 10am and 6pm. Now, please leave and go back to your apartment." she spoke coldly to me.
You could tell that she didn't really care about any of the Tributes which stood before her each year, she just cared about The Capitol and making sure she kept her job in this place for the sake of earning more money than she probably even needed.
"I'm not going back up there. The whole reason I came down here was to get away from them all." I shouted at her just as the sound of the elevator arriving in this floor made me turn around, seeing her stood there with a slight smile on her face.
She looked so much better when she wasn't wearing the crap which The Capitol provided us with for training.
She was wearing a white tshirt, black trousers and, rather than her hair being in its usual style to the side, she had left it down and you could see the natural wave which occured - she was actually beautiful.
"As I have just told him, the Training Centre is closed now until the morning. Now, back to your apartments please." Atala stressed in annoyance because I wasn't listening to her, and now there was someone else who had decided she was going to join the problem.
"Is there anywhere we can go this isn't our apartment?" Katniss asked her.
"Firstly, I'm not going to help you find some new place for you to make out with each other and-"
"Look, we just want somewhere we can talk. That's all." Katniss snapped at her.
"And that place isn't here, now out." Atala said getting more and more annoyed with having to repeat herself all the time.
"Then tell us somewhere else we can go." Katniss stated coldly.
"Fine, if it means you'll leave me alone. Floor 13 in a general rooftop where you get an even better view of The Capitol but, make sure you go somewhere out the way since it's only supposed to be for the mentors." Atala replied, seeming happy when Katniss and myself finally made our way into the elevator.
Now we don't run the risk of getting caught, there might actually be a chance for me to get inside her head and get to know the real Katniss Everdeen.
The Katniss that the people of District Twelve love and adore rather than the Katniss which people laugh at and underestimate.
