Lexi's POV

"I don't think I can ever be away from Emma this long again." I said to Ethan, as we drove to my parents' house to pick up Emma. How long has it been? Two weeks? Wow.

"Hopefully we won't have to." Ethan said, putting his hand on my leg. He pulled the car into the driveway of the familiar house. He turned the car off and we got out. The warm summer-soon-to-be-fall air grazed our skin. We walked up to the front door and I knocked 4 times.

"Hey sweetheart." My mom said, opening the door.

"Hey momma." I said, hugging her.

"Hi Ethan." She said, hugging him.

"Hey!" He said.

"Come on in." She said, as we stepped inside.

We followed my mom into the living room, where Emma was in her bouncer, happy as can be. I walked over to her, and picked her up.

"She definitely missed you guys." My mom said, smiling.

"Hi sweetie!" I said to Emma. She giggled. I handed her to Ethan. The bond that they share is truly amazing. He's the best father ever.

"Do you two have any plans for today?" Asked my mom, as she poured a cup of coffee.

"Nope." I said.

"Stay for a little while then if you want." She said, walking over to the couch.

"Sure! We can tell you all about our trip." I said, sitting down on a chair across from the couch, Ethan in the other chair, with baby Emma.

"So the first day, we wanted to do something or go somewhere but we couldn't cause we got there late and went to bed." I started the story off. "The next morning I woke up and had coffee on our balcony and let me tell you, the view was GORGEOUS."

"What did we do that day? Oh yeah, we went to this really cool little market. They had fruits and vegetables, and then they had homemade clothes and tapestries and that kind of stuff." Ethan said.

Just then my phone rang and interrupted us.

"Just keep going." I said to Ethan as I got up and walked down the hallway to answer the call.

"Hello?" I answered to the unknown number.

"This is Greendail Hospital, is this Lexi Dolan?" The voice asked.

"Yes, it is."

"We have a patient here by the name of Kale-"

"Oh my god Kale. What happened??"

"He was involved in a car crash. He's not in good condition, we suggest you come see him sooner rather than later."

"We'll be there shortly. Emergency room?"

"Yes. We have someone here, Samantha, who knows you?"

"Yes, okay, thank you." I hung up. Shit. Kale's in the hospital from a car crash. I let that sink in for a minute. My heart was racing. I walked down the hallway, back to Ethan who was telling the story of our honeymoon.

"-and we went to this luau-type dinner, it was really fun. I think it was called a 'ahaaina'-" He was saying.

"Ethan." I said, my voice cracking.

"Yeah?" He looked up at me.

"We have to go." I said. He stood up.

"Why?"

"Kale is in the hospital." I said quietly.

"Leave Emma here, it's fine. Go see Kale." My mom said, taking the baby, her eyes showing sympathy. Ethan took my hand as we walked down the hall to the front door. We walked outside and got in the car.

"Why is he in the hospital?" Ethan asked.

"He got in a car crash." I said.  He glanced over at me.

"Hey." He said, trying to get my attention.

I turned to him.

"It's gonna be okay. He's in good hands at Greendail. That's where you went after the day at the mall when we got into a crash. And you're here now. Right?" He said.

"Yes, I was fine. But you don't get it, or maybe you do, but Kale and I have known each other since we were like four years old. I can't just lose him in the matter of a heartbeat." I said, holding back the tears.

"It's gonna be fine." He said as he parked in the parking lot of the hospital. We walked into the emergency room and saw Grayson, Sam, Wyatt, and some of his sleezy asshole friends. Sam and Wyatt were yelling at each other and I couldn't believe the things that were coming out of Wyatt's mouth; that Kale was drunk, and Wyatt wanted to...kill him.

"WYATT!" I yelled, trying to get both of their attention.

"Look who it is." Wyatt said, rolling his eyes, before going back to yelling things at Sam. Ethan was talking to Gray.

"I swear to god I'll slam your head into the wall if you talk to her again like that." Ethan said, walking towards Wyatt after listening to what Wyatt was saying to Sammy.

"Yeah right, Dolan." Wyatt laughed, looking behind at his friends, who also laughed. The next thing I knew, Ethan had Wyatt by his tshirt and slammed him into the wall. Hard. I've never seen Ethan so mad before.

Wyatt tried to fight back against Ethan's force, but it was no use. Wyatt walked off with a bloody nose and a busted lip, Ethan without a single scratch. Wyatt and his friends left the hospital, and Ethan went outside and sat down on the curb.

About 10 minutes passed by.

"Samantha, Grayson, you may go see Kale now." They got up and left. Leaving me sitting in the waiting room alone.

After about half an hour more, Sammy and Gray came back from Kale's room.

"See you at home Lexi." Grayson said. Sam looked upset.

"Bye." I said.

"Lexi?" The nurse called. I stood up. "You can see Kale." I nodded and slowly opened one side of the double doors. I walked down the hall until I arrived at his room. I pushed the door open.

"Hey Lexi." Kale said.

"Hi." I said, sitting down on the chair next to his bed. I glanced at the doctor's papers on the table next to his bed. He had scratches and bruises and cuts all over.

Dislocated right shoulder, 2 broken ribs, possible signs of internal bleeding.

"At least you didn't lose your memory." I said, looking back at Kale, who'd been watching me.

"That's true." He laughed a bit, as we remembered when I lost mine.

"Do you know how long you'll have-" I was about to ask, but was cut off by the door opening, and the doctor walking in.

"Lexi, we need to prep Kale for surgery, so I'm gonna have to ask you to leave." He said. I looked at Kale. I reached over and wrapped my arms around his neck. He managed to wrap his left arm tightly around me.

"Bye. I'll come back tonight or tomorrow morning." I said.

"Okay, bye Lexi." He said. I walked back to the empty waiting room and saw Ethan still outside on the curb. I guess he just couldn't bring himself to see Kale like that. Him and Gray have gotten really close to Kale since Sam and I started dating the twins.

I opened the door and sat down next to Ethan. He put his hand on my cheek and I flinched. I didn't mean to, but I did.

"You're scared of me, aren't you?" He asked quietly.

"No..." I lied and leaned my head on his shoulder.
