“So, you’re really a mermaid?” Matthew asked (Name).

“Yeah,” (Name) said. “I know it’s pretty hard to believe but it’s the truth. My father gave me legs and sent me here to stay with Francis.” (Name) was still worried that Matthew didn’t believe her, or that he thought she was crazy.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier? I could have done something to help you, too.”

“I was honestly scared that you wouldn’t believe me at first. It is pretty hard to believe something like that.”

“You’re my friend, (Name). I don’t think you’d lie to me about this, or anything for that matter.”

(Name) smiled softly and hugged Matthew happily. “Thank you, Matthew. I’m glad to be your friend.”

Matthew returned her smile and her hug. “Me too, (Name).”  Matthew pulled back after hearing a loud explosion coming from the basement where Arthur and Allistor were working. “What in the world is going on down there?”

“It can’t be anything good,” (Name) said as she rushed down to Arthur’s basement.

Arthur and Allistor coughed and tried to fan the smoke from the explosion out of their faces. “Well that really blew up in our faces,” Allistor said.

“Real funny,” Arthur retorted as he coughed up smoke. “It seems like we still haven’t made any progress.”

“Well what do you expect? This kind of spell takes weeks if not months to practice and make perfect. No matter how important it is for (Name) to get back to her home as soon as possible, we still have to keep working until we get this spell to work perfectly.”

“What happened?” (Name) asked as she entered the basement through the door. “Is everything okay?”

“Don’t worry, lass,” Allistor said. “We’re alright.”

“Just a minor explosion,” Arthur said.

“It doesn’t look like it was just a minor explosion to me,” (Name) said as she brushed the dust off of their shirts. “Maybe now would be the perfect time for you two to get some rest for today. You did promise after all.”

“But we just barely got started today,” Allistor said. “We won’t get anywhere if we just stop here.”

“You’ll be able to get somewhere some other time. Right now, I’m more concerned about you two getting enough rest rather than make you tire yourselves out over this spell.”

Arthur finally sighed while he straightened his hair back out. “Fine we’ll get some rest if that’s what you want.”

“Are you sure you want to just quit right now?” Allistor said as he tried to brush the rest of the dust off.

“We did promise her we would get some rest, we might as well go ahead and do it.”

Allistor groaned and straightened his clothes back out. “Fine we’ll get some rest, (Name), but only because it’ll make you feel better.”

(Name) sighed in relief and hugged both of them close. “Thanks, guys,” she said before pulling back. “Hope you both rest well.”

They both nodded at her before heading out of the basement and going to their own bedrooms. (Name) followed them out and went back into the living room to meet back up with Francis and Matthew. “What happened?” Francis asked.

“Arthur and Allistor screwed up the spell they were trying to do,” (Name) said, taking a seat between Francis and Matthew on the couch.

“They’re not hurt, are they?” Matthew asked.
