We all hate Mary Sues. The last chapters show how to not make a Mary Sue. But let's summarise everything...

a) Make them have brown eyes! OK, you can give them other types of eyes but please, make most characters with brown eyes -_-

b) Give them flaws. I gave examples already but here some more: Insecurity, anger issues, make them be direct with people (make them say what's on their mind, even if it's rude), give them a huge ego, make them greedy, make them have trust issues (like me, I have trust issues). I'm not saying you should add all of these, but don't make them perfect, but you still should add positive traits to their personality.

c) Make them do something they'll regret. More than one thing. So they can be relatable

Extra things:

d) Make them have short hair, or make them have one side of their heads shaved, give them red hair (I literally never read a book with a main protagonist with red hair!), maybe have them dye their hair blue, or purple, of pink. Give them some variety!

e) Don't make a sad past, those type of stories annoy me. They always have a sad past!

f) Make them have interest on the same gender or both genders. Teen fictions never have this. Or make a story about a teen learning how to love!

g) Make them have an illness. It makes the character much more relatable to whoever has the illness that the protagonist has.

These are ideas on how to make a good characters don't give up on writing just because your character might be a Mary Sue, there's always room for improvement.
