Ok so I'm going to go quickly through the settings in each basic genre (here on Wattpad and outside of Wattpad).
Teen fiction- Wattpad.
It's obviously in high school. It's not like a teen can get a part-time job in a coffee shop or something. It's not like the two protagonists can be neighbours or something. Yes I know that teenagers spend a lot of time in school, but summer holidays exist? Can't the protagonist(s) go to a summer camp or something and meet new people there and eventually meet their partner? Take Everything, Everything (a book not on Wattpad) as a good example of teenage fiction (-ish) book that occurs outside of school. Even though I don't particularly enjoy the book, it's still nice to see the setting not revolving around a school.Horror- Outside of Wattpad.
Strangely enough, the setting is usually in a mansion. Sure there are other horror books/movies that don't occur in a creepy mansion (like IT. But I heard that IT is more comical than horror.) but it usually occurs in a creepy mansion. With a creepy doll at times.Mystery- Outside of Wattpad.
I don't really watch/read mystery books because I enjoy watching ID channel, and that's enough for me. But the ones I DO heard about are usually murder mystery. And you know what that means? It means the setting is usually in a office/science lab (Sorry, I watch Criminal Minds now and then... but I do have to admit, they do go around to other places talking to witnesses/suspects, but DNA testing, autopsy, interrogation and polygraph tests do occur in offices/labs. So most of the time is in offices/labs.).I've read a play that is a mystery play that doesn't occur in a police office or lab. It occurs in the house of the murders. It's basically a suicide story. And the inspector goes to talk to the ones that made the girl suicide and how it happened. It's called An Inspector Calls, it's a nice play definitely mystery of what happened after what and who was more at fault (it's more of a moral play but eh.)— And let me not forget about the ending! The ending was surely mysterious.
What I'm trying to say is: What can't there be a mystery book/movie that occurs in the perspective of a friend of family member of the victim, and they see that the police does no progress whatsoever and investigates by themselves. It would be nice for a change.
Comedy- Outside (and maybe inside) of Wattpad.
A comedy is usually inside the character's houses. Think of it like... The Big Bang Theory (Not particularly funny but still labelled as "comedy"), American Dad (adult humour), Family Guy (again adult humour). It's usually set inside the character's house. Even The Simpsons have SOME variety where the episodes occur sometimes in Lisa's school, or that episode when the Church burned down and Marge had to go to a casino to get money. It needs some variety like that. But then again, I'm horrible with humour so maybe I'm wrong.
Those were the basic genres that I could think of. We can discuss some more in the comments, I guess?
