We all know that one book/movie that always has a character that is there just to make people laugh.
You know, that character that is meaningless and yet they're made just to make funny remarks that don't help the plot at all.
You can take the emoji movie as an example. That emoji hand guy that is Gene's "friend" is just there to be funny. Take him out of the story and I doubt anything would change.
A book should obviously have a funny character, but it has become a cliché to make a character that is funny and doesn't help anyone with anything. If you're going to make a funny character, then make them relevant!
For example,
Mystery.
That one guy that is really funny but knows when to be serious and actually help solve the mystery.Romance.
The friend that will cheer up the main character when they're feeling sad in case a break up happens (which does happen in some books. They'll obviously get together again because romance!).If a break up doesn't happen, then the character should be the one that brings them together so the plot starts moving.
Horror.
The one that tries to calm everyone down when something bad happens. They should help keep the sanity of the group.Action.
The funny guy that is really good at fighting/ very good at strategies.A character can be funny and help the plot moving. All it takes is a bit of creativity/hard work.
