I looked down at the body with horror. No, no, no this couldn't be happening. I stared at the hole where my Mother used to be, and started to howl.

I howled, raising my head to HeavenPack, out of the distant areas of my soul. The sound sounded so haunting, so sorrowful that I hardly recognized it as my own voice.

All of the sudden I heard howls behind me. I turned and saw my packmates, my family howling with me. As my howls faded into night, I had tears streaming down my muzzle. I felt so sad. For a moment I thought about jumping into the freezing cold water myself, but I realized I couldn't.

I had more family that needed me now. I spun around, but forgot I was on ice, and fell onto my muzzle. What was the use of getting up? Why would I EVEN bother?

All of the sudden I felt a nuzzling in my side. I opened my tear brimmed eyes and saw my Father gazing down at me with blank eyes. He started to shove me closer to the shore but I didn't move. I really had no need to. Did I?

All of the sudden he snarled at me. He lunged his jaws at me and bit into my ear. I whimpered, and with my head and tail down, started to walk to shore.

The other wolves parted for us as we walked past them, but my Father didn't seem to notice. I looked up at his face but his eyes were glazed over, just like icy lake, and his pupils were the murderous holes that my Mother had frozen in.
