I watch as Ava's wolf leaps out of the broken window. I knew she wasn't going to listen to me, but I still hated her running straight into danger without me being there to protect her, though I know I would have done the same thing.
My back still burns from the explosion, but I would rather it be me than Ava. I would have happily died if it meant to save her, but it didn't come to that—yet.
I looked over at my family as audible groans sounded over the gunshots and explosions. The majority of them are in the same boat as me, but were slowly getting up.
I pulled myself up to a sitting position, not wanting to leave Ava out there without me. I know she is the best fighter and can handle herself, but she is my mate, has been since I was eight.
I shift in the living room, with a roar of pain as my burnt back, stretches and sprouts fur. As soon as the shift is over, the pain subsides and I feel stronger.
I leap out of the window, searching around the ongoing battle for Ava. The buildings are on fire, lighting up the night sky, and wolves fall as bullets hit them. I let out an angry roar, causing some of the hidden shooters to become aware of my presence.
Bullets come towards me, but I manage to dodge them as I follow their line of fire back towards the shooters, ripping them apart. I can't smell them, but I can find them by using their own weapons against them.
I spotted Ava's red wolf just as she tackles three guys at once, slamming them into the ground and ripping into them. My distraction costs me, causing a bullet to pierce my side. I let out a small whine before spinning around and charging the shooter, but before I can make it there, Ava's already killed him.
She runs up to me and licks my face before carefully nudging my side with a small whimper. She didn't like seeing me hurt, well, I didn't like seeing her hurt either, and she was covered in bullet wounds. I nudged her with my own nose and licked her face.
The sound of an explosion drew the two of us apart. Ava ran ahead towards the sound of the explosion and I followed close behind. As soon as we reached the scene, my heart broke in half. Wolves were running around as their fur was burning, some were being dragged away in nets, while others were being injected with poisons, of course there were some lying lifelessly on the ground.
Ava obviously thought the same thing, because she through her head back and howled, before charging at the nearest man with more anger and fury than I have ever seen. She ripped him to pieces effortlessly, before moving to the next one in a blood-filled craze. Bullets pelted her fur, but she ignored them like mosquito bites as she continues to dispatch the men.
I was brought out of my daze when a whimper sounded a little bit in front of me, causing me to let out a loud roar, before charging the three soldiers that were attempting to drag off one of my wolves. I easily killed him by pinning him to the ground and ripping into his throat.
Ava's pained snarl rang in my ears, causing me to leap up and follow the awful sound of her in pain. I found her locked into battle with a soldier that was huge. He turned slightly, allowing me to see his face with the firelight, causing me to notice the three scars on his face.
That was the man that killed Ben Tavion, Ava's father.
