As I drive, I can't help but look over at Ava in the passenger's seat. She looks really excited about Adam finding his mate. I guess she was hoping he would be nicer now that he found his mate. I was hoping to.
I leaned over and placed a hand on her thigh, making her look over and smile at me. My heart skipped a beat at the look. No matter how many times I saw her smile, it always made me breathless. She was just so fucking beautiful. I was lucky to have her as my mate.
"So what are we going to tell everybody when we get back?" I ask, looking back towards the road, but kept my hand on her leg.
"That Adam died?" she says with a shrug, making me look over at her with raised eyebrows. 'kidding, we will tell them the truth. Let's just hope Adam doesn't get mad at us for it," she muttered the last part, making me chuckle.
"Well, doesn't he want to impress his mate? If he explodes on you for something like that, he will get his ass handed to him, and that is not something any guy would want to show their mate."
"But I beat you all the time," she bats her eyelashes at me, making me blow air out of my nose.
"Yeah, well, I have given up my pride a long time ago. I had to since I have you as a mate."
"Hey! I'm not that bad...am I?"
"Nah, you're perfect," I smile over at her, making her breathe hitch.
I loved that I had that effect on her. It was good to know I wasn't the only one effected by the mate pull. The car ride is spent with light bickering, with the soft background of Metallica playing in the background—one of Ava's favorite bands.
I loved being in her company. We could be doing anything, or even nothing, and I would be totally content with just being near her.
I watched the road as we drove through the street, surrounded by the dark woods. I kept an eye out for any other cars or deer, mostly the later. They were everywhere around these parts.
Suddenly, a loud pop could be heard and the car started to swerve. Ava let out a panicked shriek, gripping the dashboard in front of her, leaving a small dent. The car swerved off the road slightly, but I finally got control and stopped the car on the side of the road.
"Are you okay?" I asked, looking over at Ava as I unbuckled my seatbelt.
"Yeah. You?" she asks, looking me over as she unbuckles her own.
"Wait here," I order, opening the car door.
"Oh hell no! This is where we get ambushed,' she protests, hopping out of the car, making me sigh.
She watched to many action movies, oh and horror movies. She was a fanatic. Which I was thankful for, because honestly, who would want to sit through romantic sob stories? Certainly not me, and thankfully, Ava hated those types of movies.
I walked around the car, meeting Ava in the back as she looked down at the tires. I followed her line of sight and noticed the flat tire. Ava's eyebrows scrunched together in confusion, before she leaned down towards the back tire. She touched the tire, carefully, pulling something out of the rubber.
As she stood up, holding a small metal dart between her fingers. The front was very thin and sharp, something that could easily pop a tire.
"We didn't just run over this. Someone shot the car with this," Ava growled quietly, turning around and looking behind us at our surroundings.
I spun around also, taking in the darkness. There was nothing there. The forest wasn't unnaturally quiet and there was no movement from anything that didn't belong in the forest.
I used my enhanced hearing, but heard nothing. Beside me, Ava started sniffing the air, but I could tell she came up with nothing when a confused and angry look passed over her features.
"Stay here," I ordered moving towards the direction where the dart was shot from.
"Nope, do you know what happiness every time people split up? Somebody ends up dead, and I am not letting it be you," she hissed, following me.
Ugh! Stupid movie loving mate! her love for movies was either going to save her one day, or get her killed. I refused to let it be the later.
"Come on, Minho. We are the two best fighters in the pack, we can handle this," she says calmly, kissing my cheek quickly.
I knew she was right, but I still couldn't watch her fight without getting so angry. The occasional human attack or rogue attack would always have me going crazy, but I knew Ava could handle herself, probably better than even I could fight for myself.
She was just amazing, but I couldn't help but feel that one day I may lose her.
