CeCe and I had been standing in front of the door for at least twenty minutes. Neither of us wanted to go inside. We wanted this day to last forever. We both knew as soon as we walked through the front door we would be in trouble.
"Now or never." She said with the look of defeat.
I don't know what got into me but I suddenly felt the need to protect her. I've never been the brave kid. The strong one. I've never purposely got in trouble. I always tried to steer very far away from it but something about her made me feel different.
"Let me do the talking." I said opening the door and stepping in first.
The house was quiet. Almost too quiet. Ann came around the corner at lightening speed.
"Where have you two been? I came this close to calling the police!" She half yelled.
"I'm sorry Ann." CeCe said holding her head down.
"It's my fault. It's been a rough couple of weeks and I guess I kind of just snapped. Honestly if it wasn't for Cecelia I probably wouldn't have made it back. I got a little lost."
Ann visibly relaxed.
"I will let it slide this time, for both of you. Don't let it happen again."
We both nodded.
"Now get upstairs and get showered. You both look horrible. Dinner is in an hour." Ann said quickly leaving the room.
CeCe turned to me and smiled.
"I must say for the shy boy who sat in the back ignoring everyone around him you're a damn good liar. I almost believed you myself."
I smiled and walked up the steps towards my room. I could feel CeCe taking two steps at a time to catch up to me.
"You're not going to say anything?"
I shook my head.
"Come on! We just had an awesome time and you're going to just end it like that?" She asked as we turned the corner to the hallway.
I turned around as soon as I knew we were out of eyesight. CeCe ran right into me and I let out a laugh.
"You're an ass."
I gently grabbed her face and pulled her into a kiss. She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled herself closer to me. She opened her mouth for more and I pulled away, turned around and started walking to my room again.
"Tease!" She called after me and walked in the opposite direction to her room.
It took less than two days with this girl to break down a small part of the wall I had been building for so many years. I could actually feel a slight pang of fear at the thought of what she could do in a month. She was going to break me. Brick by brick until I had nothing left.
I pulled some clothes out of my suitcase and went into the bathroom. I needed this shower. It was the only place I've ever really been able to think. And I had plenty of stuff to think about. I Turned the water on as hot as it would go and stepped in letting the water melt away my feelings.
After my shower I laid down on my bed and stared at the ceiling, to afraid to leave the room and risk bumping into CeCe. I was able to think clearly in the shower. And I knew I needed to stay away from her before one of us ended up hurt. I didn't think about her having no boundaries until she came sneaking through the bedroom door.
"I got to say I was kind of digging the cave man look." She said sitting down on the edge of the bed.
I tried to ignore her but she wasn't one to be ignored.
"Hello? Earth to Aaron."
"I shouldn't have kissed you."
"Why not?" She asked clearly caught off guard.
"Cause I'm not normally that guy."
"So?"
"So I shouldn't lead you on like that."
"I'm a big girl Aaron. I think I can tell when I'm being led on." She said resting her hand on my thigh.
It shot waves of excitement up and down my body. I could feel my heart pick up speed. I sat up and moved beside her to get her hand off of me.
"I'm always going to be that shy guy with whose off in his own little world."
"That's okay. That's the guy I started crushing on. The other guy was just a fling." She said with a wink.
Once again she got me to smile. It was like she had some magical power to make me stop thinking and start reacting to my life. I couldn't just sit in a corner silently thinking to myself when she was around.
"So after dinner you want to go to the park? It's Friday so we get a midnight curfew."
"I think we've had enough of the park for a while." I laughed.
"A movie it is then."
"I don't have money."
"Where's your sense of adventure?" She asked with her signature smirk.
"Hiding behind the flashing danger signs." I said.
"I have no idea what you're talking about. I would never put myself in a dangerous situation."
"Says the girl who could tell the cops were coming before the flashlight turned on."
"Okay so I may have been in a few situations."
We both laughed until Noah came running in the room.
"Ann in thirty." He said running to his bed.
CeCe jumped up and ran over to the closet quickly going in and shutting the door just in time for Ann to walk in.
"Dinner is in fifteen minutes. Have you seen Cecelia? She needs to set the table."
"I think she was checking the mail." Noah said smoothly.
"If see comes up here tell her I want her in the kitchen right away. I swear I can never find that girl." Ann said closing the door.
We waited until we couldn't hear her footsteps anymore before moving.
"Clear." Noah whispered loudly.
CeCe opened the closet door and giggled.
"Thanks Noah now I have to actually check the mail."
"No danger huh?" I said
"You consider that danger? Then get ready for the night of your life! We're leaving at eight." She said leaving the room.
"I'm Noah by the way."
I didn't even realize when he first came in the room that I hadn't met him yet. I wondered where he was yesterday. At least my roommates are close to my age. Maybe I might actually make some friends.
"I'm Aaron."
"So you know CeCe or something?"
"Just met her yesterday why?"
"She doesn't usually take this much interest in the temps."
"Temps?"
"Temporary kids. CeCe and I are permanent placement, we're here till we're legal. Michael is a ping pong, He's here one month gone the next, just to return again. You're a temporary kid. Here for a couple months then back home."
"You think I'll be able to go home?"
"The state doesn't actually care about any one. Unless your parents killed someone you'll be home soon."
I didn't know whether to be excited or sick. I wanted to go home but I was starting to enjoy being away.
