I quickly packed my bags. I was so excited to finally move in by my cousin John. At first I was nervous, but he promised he would help me settle in. I was glad he was my cousin. Who else would I have to pick on that would actually tease back? The house next to his had opened up, and he suggested that I should move in. I figured it would be pretty fun living next to him. I hadn't seen him in a while now.
I threw on a jacket and made sure I had everything with me. I didn't have much since I had bunking with my roommate. The furniture was all mine and packed, so all I had to worry about was clothing. I took a quick look around the place. I was glad I was finally leaving. The only reason I had stayed here was because it was the only residence open, but now that I was moving to LA it didn't matter. I was tired of coming home (if I could call it that) to find my roommate with a man.
I smiled and left, my suitcase rolling behind me. My ears were filled with the sound of the click of the door shutting. I sucked in a deep breath and took a step forward. This was the first step towards my new life. I would be flying across the country to my new home. I filled with excitement as the wheels on my suitcase rolled behind me, turning as I left the apartment complex.

I yawned and stretched. The flight had been long but worth it. I had been stuck between an overweight guy that smelled like cheese and grease and a lady with a crying baby. The kid behind me had kept kicking my seat, and the stewardess had spilled some water on my pants. I managed to keep my cool and shrug everything off. I walked off of the plane and over to the baggage claim. Picking up my suitcase, I walked out front and signaled to a taxi.
John had said he was too busy to come pick me up. He said otherwise he would've, but he just couldn't make it. I gave the driver directions and put in headphones. I watched the world pass by through the window. Excitement grew in my chest as we got closer. I couldn't wait to finally have a place to myself. My heart rate picked up speed as we turned onto the street my new house was on. I recognized it from photos.
I told the driver this was far enough and paid him. I climbed out and pulled my suitcase behind me, shutting the door of the yellow taxi. I began to walk down the sidewalk. It then turned into a brisk walk, then a jog. I just couldn't wait to get inside and unpack. I mentally smacked myself for not having a sleeping bag. Oh well, I didn't mind sleeping on the floor.
I stepped up to my door and fumbled with the keys. I found the right one and inserted it into the keyhole. My heart pounded as I turned the key. This is it, the moment I had been waiting for. I turned the knob and pushed the door open. I was surprised when the lights came on and a bunch of voices yelled at me.
"Surprise!" they all said.
I was confused. I didn't have any friends in LA, so who were they and how did they get into my house? Then I noticed the person up front. I could never forget his slightly curly brown hair and warm brown eyes, his lopsided grin with dimples. I squealed and dropped my bag, sprinting towards John and leaping into his outstretched arms. I flung my arms around him and squeezed for all I was worth.
"Easy there, tiger. It's good to see you too," he chuckled.
I buried my face in his shoulder and cried. He had been in Afghanistan when he talked to me about getting a house near his so I could look after it. I had thought he wasn't coming back for another year. He held me tightly, setting his chin on top of my head. He had been the closest to a brother to me, so seeing him here was almost unreal.
It took me a minute to realize I was crying in front of people. I quickly choked it down and wiped my eyes. I took in slow, shaky breaths before daring to look up at him. He was still the same John as when he left a year ago. He kissed the top of my head and let me go. I didn't want to let go, but I knew I had to. I wiped at my eyes again before looking around.
