Even though it's a Tuesday, I schedule an appointment to see the OB/GYN anyway.
"Hi, how can I help you?" A nice-sounding lady speaks when I call the office's number.
"Hi, um, I'm pregnant and I would like to see the OB/GYN." I say nervously, biting my fingernails, a habit I acquire.
"Okay, ma'am. What's your name?"
"Allison Barry."
"Okay. Got it. Well, the OB/GYN Dr. Heathers is booked all week, so are you available for an appointment next Tuesday on November 2 at 10:00 AM?"
"Okay, yeah, that's fine. I'll be there. Thanks very much!"
"You're welcome, ma'am." And with that, she hangs up.
Man, I wish I don't have to wait an entire week! But it'll be there before I know it...
~ ~ ~
Yep, I was right. The week flew by, and now it's Tuesday, November 2. I had to leave school early, but that's all right because I'll be back to school by lunchtime.
I arrive at the OB/GYN by myself. Delilah would accompany me, but she can't afford to miss school. And, of course, her parents are at work. Therefore, I'm alone.
"Allison Barry?" A pretty woman dressed in scrubs calls.
I sit up from my chair, exit the waiting room, and follow her through the door down the hallway.
"I'm Ms. Garrett, Dr. Heathers' medical assistant," The pretty woman introduces herself with a warm, kind smile and a handshake. "It's nice to meet you."
"Hi, it's nice to meet you too," I reply shyly.
Ms. Garrett measures my height and weight; I'm 5'4 and 150 pounds. I've already gained twenty five pounds!
"The baby is making me fat," I chuckle, rubbing my pudgy belly.
Ms. Garrett chuckles. "Believe me, you'll be the size of a watermelon by the end of your pregnancy!"
I sarcastically reply with a groan, "Yay, looking forward to it!"
After measuring my temperature and blood pressure, Ms. Garrett leads me to the exam room, and I seat myself on the gray leather chair, which looks similar to the kind of chair at the dentist's.
"Dr. Heathers should be here in a few minutes or so," Ms. Garrett informs me then she leaves the room, shutting the door behind her.
As I wait, I play Candy Crush on my phone.
By the time I complete two levels, a tall, slender, Asian (perhaps Chinese or Japanese?) woman enters the room.
"Hello, Miss Barry, I'm Dr. Heathers," She greets me with a soft, smooth, silky voice and a friendly grin.
"You can call me Allison," I say happily with a big smile.
Dr. Heathers chuckle. "All righty then."
She seats herself on that round chair thing that spins around. She glances at the piece of paper attached to her clipboard.
"I'm going to ask you a few questions, okay, honey?" Dr. Heathers says gently.
I nod my head and smile. "Okay."
"How old are you?"
"Sixteen..." I smile awkwardly.
"Ah, a young mommy, huh?" She's still smiling, which surprises me. "When was your last period?"
"Um, I don't know. My periods are always irregular."
"Hmm. Okay. Well, when did you conceive the child?"
"July 18."
"Okay, your due date is...let's see..." Dr. Heathers mentally does the math. "April 26, 2011."
"Wow..." I say in awe. "So, how far along am I?"
"Exactly fifteen weeks. That's three and a half months already."
"Wow. That's unbelievable."
"Yep. Just six months until you give birth to your precious bundle of joy."
I just smile for what seems forever. "Wow..."
Dr. Heathers chuckles. "Okay, now I'm going to run an ultrasound."
"Okay, will it, um, hurt?" I ask worriedly.
"Oh, not at all, dear!" Dr. Heathers chuckle.
She rubs some sort of cold gel on my stomach and there's a gray, fuzzy picture on the TV monitor hooked up in the corner of the ceiling.
"See the baby?" Dr. Heathers point at the teeny tiny body about the size of an apple with a head, arms, and legs.
"Aww, it's sucking on its thumb!" I exclaim, tears of joy filling my eyes.
"Yes, it's adorable, right?" Dr. Heathers says, smiling.
I nod my head. "Yes. Will it be a boy or a girl? Or is it too early to tell?"
Dr. Heathers replies, "No, it's a bit too early to find out the sex. However, I can when you're somewhere between seventeen and twenty weeks along."
I nod my head, understanding. "Okay. When will the next appointment be?"
"Tuesday, December 7," Dr. Heathers replies. "During the second trimester - which is week thirteen to twenty seven - you must get a checkup every month. So is the first Tuesday of every month, okay?"
"Okay, sounds great," I say happily, standing up. "Can I take the ultrasound with me?"
"Of course, dear!" She says with a grin.
After she prints out the copy of the ultrasound, she hands it to me.
"I'll see you next month," Dr. Heathers says as she walks me back into the waiting room.
"Okay, thanks so much!" I wave a goodbye to her and exit the clinic.
As odd as it sounds, I feel so happy right now! I got to meet my unborn baby!
I stare at the ultrasound. It may be a fetus to others, but according to me, it's a beautiful, beautiful baby growing inside my tummy.
And most importantly, it's MY baby. MY son or daughter.
I'm actually now looking forward to marching through this pregnancy. I'm still way too young, I'd rather be in my mid twenties and married, but fate obviously had a different idea in mind. For some unknown reason, fate decided to throw my life off course and get me pregnant at age sixteen.
And you know what? I don't care. I'm gonna be the best mommy to the best child.
