A Child Forgotten - Part One

By Coby Prigg aka the Flash

A single lonely star lights the evening sky,

A young boy of eleven watches his father die.

Though not from cancer nor the barrel of a gun,

This man is dying from glassfuls of rum,

His car pulls in the driveway as the day is all but done,

The boy is in his room and the star still shines on.

He hears his parents screaming and the smashing of glass,

He crawls beneath his blankets for the pain will never pass.

The sounds were too familiar for such a young boy’s ear,

He went to sleep each night, his mind filled with fear.

The new day comes and he hopes they’ll start anew,

It is just one of his dreams that are sadly far and few.

The boy steps on the bus knowing his day is doomed,

Nonetheless he’ll try, to hide his shameful wound.

The teachers at school know something is amiss,

Try as they may, their comfort is not bliss.

He spends his lunches alone, crouched behind a tree,

Only in his books, does this boy seem truly free.

He returns to class, his eyes wet from crying,

For he remembers to well that his father’s slowly dying.

This following evening is very much the same,

His mother’s find her drugs are all that keep her tame.

His sister had left them many months ago,

It was all too much, for a young mind to know.

Once again the boy is in his room,

Looking at a star while thinking of his doom,

He vowed there and then that one day he would flee

With a single purpose in mind, the purpose of being free.
