I stay by her side for the next two months. I watch as she progresses and it's amazing. Her skin glows now, her hair is vibrant again and she smiles. She still gets scared easily but we have three extra bodyguards now that she trusts. The man got the full sentence that everyone wanted.
Amy and I are closer than ever. I guess being next to each other for just over two months straight does that. It reminds me of what things were like when we were still in school.
"Adam?" she asks.
"Yeah?" I ask as I turn to face her.
"When is Abby supposed to be here?" she asks.
"Now really." I say as I look at my watch. Almost on que there is a knock at the door. I open the door and Abby walks in.
"Abby's here." I say and Amy comes from behind the wall. She smiles and they hug.
I watch TV while Abby and Amy talk on the adjacent sofa.
"Yeah, but no tour. I just can't." Amy says.
"Of course. They understand." Abby says. I feel Amy looking at me and I look over.
"What do you think?" Amy asks.
"About what?" I ask.
"The label want to put out the album." She says.
"Just do what makes you feel happy and comfortable." I say. Amy bites her lip and nods.
"No tour and more online promo, I'm not doing live performances." Amy says. Abby nods and starts typing.
"Recorded performances?" she asks.
"Controlled ones." Amy says and Abby nods.
Abby soon leaves and I feel Amy staring at me.
"What?" I ask with an amused tone. She doesn't smile.
"Are you happy?" she asks.
"What?" I ask.
"Are you happy here? Anne says I need to start distancing myself so you can be your own person." Amy says sadly.
"Amy..." I trail off.
"Answer the question, I don't mind." She says. I stay quiet and I see the sadness in her eyes she looks away and I know she is trying not to cry. I stand up and I sit next to her and I make her look at me.
"I am happy here because I am with you. Yes it would be nice to maybe have an hour or two for myself every once in a while but I am happy as I am too." I say.
"I just don't want to ruin your life." She says. I hug her and he hugs back.
"You are my life Amy, you can't ruin my life." I say. She gives me a small smile and my eyes go to her lips. I look back to her eyes but her eyes are on my lips. I smile and so does she. I look in her eyes and as I lean in I hear keys by the door. Amy's eyes turn from happiness to fear and I go to the door.
"Hey." I say as Amy's dad comes in. He visits every day.
"Hello." He says and smiles warmly at me.
"Dad." Amy says happily. They hug.
"I wanted to say goodbye, the clinic needs me and you're doing brilliantly so I'm going back." He says.
"Oh, ok, you'll visit soon though right?" she asks.
"Of course." He says. He gives her a huge hug and he takes me to the side.
"She loves you." He says. I bite my lip. "See, I know you know. Now, by god if you hurt her I will rip you to shreds but I don't think you're that stupid anymore. This was her mothers, use it when the time is right and if things don't work out I will make sure you give it to her as a parting gift." He says and shoves a box in my hand. "I have a plane to catch." He says and with a final goodbye he leaves.
I look inside the box and there sits her mother's engagement ring. It's a white gold with a black stone on top with small diamonds around it. It's beautiful.
"Adam?" Amy asks. I put the box in my pocket and sit with Amy.
That night while Amy is in the shower I hide the box in my drawer with my T-shirts. Amy comes out of the bathroom in shorts and my hoodie. I smile, I love seeing her in my clothes. She likes being in them so it's a good compromise.
"What are you doing?" she asks.
"Just putting away some clothes." I lie. I get in my side of the bed and she cuddles close to me. It always amazes me how quickly she can go to sleep, she closes her eyes and she is asleep in about a minute. Tonight she doesn't. She draws random shapes on my chest and keeps her eyes open.
"You ok?" I ask as she stares out of the window.
"I'm just thinking about what I want to do after this album." She says.
"Are you thinking about retiring?" I ask.
"Well, I love music, I love writing it and singing it and when I'm on stage and I see the crowd connect it makes me feel amazing. I remember in Stockholm I dimmed the lights and everyone shone their torches. You couldn't tell the difference between the night sky and the crowd." She says and I feel her smile. "But, I don't know, I don't think it will be the same." She says.
"Well, you won't know until you do it." I say. She nods. "Work yourself into it. One step at a time. Release the album. Do a couple controlled recorded performances, then with a larger crowd, then live, then small shows and work up to whatever you can do." I say.
"Yeah, sounds good." She says. I kiss the top of her head.
"Sleep on it." I say and she closes her eyes. We soon fall asleep.
I wake up to a strange feeling. I slowly open my eyes and I see that Amy is not there. I stand and see that the bathroom is empty. I get nervous. I check upstairs and she is not there. I go downstairs and I smell food. I walk into the kitchen and Amy is making breakfast.
"What are you doing?" I ask.
"Making breakfast. I didn't want to wake you so I decided to make breakfast alone." She says.
"Wow, I'm proud." I say.
"Yeah, I spent an hour going up and down the stairs but I pushed through it." she says. I smile and she puts a plate in front of me. We eat and watch TV.
She rests her head on my shoulder and I kiss her hairline. She looks up at me and my eyes flick to her lips again. She bites her lip and I bite my tongue to stop the groan that wants to escape. Her eyes flick to my lips and she sits up. Our noses touch and then our lips lightly graze. I take a deep breath and just as I am about to lean in there is a knock at the door.
"It's me." Abby says from the other side of the door. I sigh and I open the door.
"What do you want?" I ask.
"I'm doing Amy's hair." She says and holds up the bag of hair dye. I sigh and open the door.
For the first time Amy says I can be in the bedroom instead of the bathroom with them. I just play games on my phone. An hour later they come back out and Amy's hair is a dark red, instead of a fiery red.
"I like it." I say.
"Yeah, I'm letting my natural hair come back so I wanted a colour close to my natural colour while still being red." Amy says and plays with her hair.
"Yeah, well, your first performance is tomorrow at noon. I'll send you the address but I have to go, doctors appointment." Amy and I say goodbye and I escort Abby out.
"I think she still likes you." Amy says once I close the door. I turn around and I see Amy standing there with her arms crossed.
"That's sad, because I like you." I say and push some of her hair back. She closes her eyes and smiles.
"I like you too." She says and looks up at me.
"Good, because I've been waiting to do this for a while." I say and I cup the other side of her face. I lightly bend down and kiss her. Her arms wrap around me and one of her hands goes to the back of my hair and she plays with it. This is happiness.
