On the thirty-first day, Luke stayed.

I woke up and he was kneeling by my bed, his head resting on the mattress. He must have fallen asleep there.

"He refused to leave your side," Lisa tells me.

I squint at her thin silhouette in the doorway.

"It's weird, like he thinks he's going to protect you while running on two hours of sleep."


She snorted, headed down the hallway.

I frowned. It's seemed like a shame to wake him up, but he couldn't possibly be comfortable like that. 

I nudged his head, and he reacted immediately.

"Huh?! What's wrong?!" 

He whipped his head around so quickly he fell over, but he was up again in a second.

"Luke?"

I rested my hand on his arm.

"Y-.. Yeah?"

"Come sleep with me." 

For a second, I saw a sparkle in his eye.

"Not like that, you little shit."

I rolled my eyes. 

"Whatever you say, honey."

But he smiled and crawled into bed next to me.

I fell asleep listening to the beat of his heart
