Chapter 3
New Friends and Others
"You're going to have to explain that one Mrs. Sarber," Annie said, grinning at her. "Okay, I will...." Mrs. Sarber said, taking a seat on Annie's bed...."Well, to begin with, your mother Sara was, ....um....a very curious, very intelligent and very adventuresome soul. She was a character!" Mrs. Sarber chuckled and then sighed.
Annie and her friends were hanging on her every word. "And I loved her...." Mrs. Sarber said, her voice cracking a bit. She cleared her throat and went on...." Sara saw a mystery everywhere she went. Well, almost anyway. She and her three friends, Josie, Claire and Emily actually helped the local sheriff in solving some crimes." She said proudly.
"Wow!" Both girls said in amazement. "Annie, your mom was a heroin! " Beth said in an awed voice. "Most people around here thought so...." Mrs. Sarber said...."Somehow...." Mrs. Sarber hesitated for a moment, then went on...."I always ended up in the middle of Sara and her friends escapades." Mrs. Sarber ended on a girlish giggle.
"You?" Annie said in a shocked voice. "But why? How?" Beth asked eagerly. Neither of the girls could believe that Mrs. Sarber would be involved in such things. "I was sort of their confidant. You know, the one they could tell secrets to. And I did manage to keep them out of trouble." She said in defense of her actions.
"So you knew they were investigating crimes and you didn't tell on them?" Annie said incredulously. "Only because the police knew of their involvement and they came to me for my help, and they were only involved only as far as the sheriff wanted them to be; kept out of danger in other words." Mrs. Sarber defended herself.
"What could I do?...." She asked them, pleading for the girls to understand her position. "All four of them were fine girls, A students with good hearts." Annie and Beth smiled at her. "You're an old softy." Annie said. Beth giggled. Mrs. Sarber smirked at them, cleared her throat and said, "I have a scrap book of their years here."
"Oh, can we see it?" Annie begged. "Yes, please!" Beth pleaded too. "Sometime...." Mrs. Sarber said.... "I have to find it among my stored boxes." She said, getting to her feet, and turning to go. Then she stopped short, almost at the door. "Dinner's in a couple of hours." "Okay." Annie said, feeling a little down, because she couldn't see the scrap book now.
