"What are you girls up to?" Ruthie asked suspiciously. Annie hesitated and looked at her friends before answering. They just shrugged at her. "Um, just checking how the investigation is going." Annie said innocently. Then she suddenly changed the subject. "By the way, how do we get to chapel on Sunday?"
Annie already knew. She just didn't want the subject to return to the investigation. She was sure that Ruthie was suspicious that she. Beth, Katie and Trisha were somehow involved. "Buses." Ruthie replied curtly. Then added, "Annie, I spent many years with your mother and her friends in this school, and I know when four girls...." She looked at each one in turn. ...."are butting into something that is none of your business." Annie and her friends got up from their seats and walked away, waving as they went. "I'm watching you!" Ruthie called to them. "See you at dinner!" Annie called back. Ruthie growled and scowled and made her way to the kitchen doors carrying sheriff Cooper's plates.
"She knows." Beth said in an anxious whisper. Annie giggled. "Yeah, she does." "Aren't you worried?" Katie asked incredulously. "No." Annie said while the girls walked down the hallway. "Why not?" Trisha asked her, looking around Beth's shoulder. "Do you remember how Ruthie said she got involved with the first Mystery Club Detectives?" It was quiet for a few moments.
Then Trisha answered. "Um yeah. She said they were good girls with good hearts and she just couldn't let them get into trouble." Then a sudden enlightened look appeared on Trisha's face. "Oh yeah. She also said they were "A" students and that....she loved them." Trisha ended.
"Exactly." Annie said with a grin. "We're good girls with good hearts, "A" students....and she loves us." Annie assured them. "Are you sure she loves us?" Trisha asked nervously. Annie giggled. "I'm sure." "By the way, where are we going?" Beth asked warily. Annie grinned again. "We're going to get to know our neighbors." The others glanced at one another in confusion.
Beth, Trisha and Katie followed Annie up the stairs, down the hall and into Annie and Beth's dorm room. The girls took seats on the twin beds, two girls on each, facing each other. "Okay. What do you mean by, getting to know our neighbors?" Katie asked, with a brow raised. "Probably, exactly what you think." Annie said with a sly smile.
Before she could elaborate, her cell rang out it's tune. "Hi auntie....."Yeah, I'm good. how are y'all doin'?"......"He broke his toe! How did he do that?"......."Molly stepped on it! He knows he has to give her an apple when he puts on her shoes." Annie's friends were giving each other amused looks, and Annie was trying desperately hard not to laugh......"Okay, I'll check my face book."
"If you see Kenny and Jeanie again, tell them I love and miss them."......."I've made three great friends. Beth is my roommate, and Katie and Trisha live next door. Annie's eyes were suddenly huge as she looked at her friends. "What's wrong Annie?" Beth asked her, immediately worried. Annie waved her hand with a smile.
"I do know about that. How do you?" Her friends now gave her confused looks. Suddenly, Annie grinned. Beth nudged her in the side and whispered, "Don't scare us like that. We thought something terrible was wrong. Annie whispered a quick I'm sorry. "Oh, Mom told you....."Yeah, I promise I'll check my face book." She rolled her eyes at the others......"We've been really busy settling in."
......." I promise you, we won't do anything against the school rules or illegal."......"Thanks Auntie. Yes. I know I'm my mother's daughter. I'm totally proud of that."......."I love you too. I promise to check my face book at least once a day. Bye." Annie rang off and sighed.
"What's this about not doing anything illegal?" Beth asked, glaring at her. Annie laughed. "Relax Beth. Auntie knows about Mom's Mystery Club Detectives and...." "And what?" Beth asked, still glaring. Auntie just said not to do anything foolish. "Or illegal. So she suspects we're about to do what your mom and her friends did?" Beth said in an anxious voice.
"Yes. She suspects. But she doesn't know. And even if she did, she wouldn't tell anyone, including Miss Leighton; if that's what you're worried about." Annie sighed. "Look. I'm not trying to be some kind of hero here. I guess, well I do have my Mom's curiosity and sense of adventure. But it's more than that in this case.
"I just can't sit around and do nothing when Miss Leighton is so sad and miserable, and maybe going to resign. She said all this staring intensely at her friends. "I've got your back." Beth said with a smile. "Us too." Katie and Trisha said in unison. Suddenly, there was a knocked on the door. Annie jumped off the bed and went to answer it.
"Hey girls." It was Ruthie. "Hey!" the girls chimed. Annie remember Ruthie's parting words in the cafeteria and wondered if they were about to get a lecture. "Sheriff Cooper would like to speak to all of you. Now." She said soberly. Was sheriff Cooper going to lecture them instead? Annie worried.
Annie, Beth, Trisha and Katie were suddenly nervous. "He's waiting in the cafeteria." Ruthie said, still sober. But then seeing the frightened looks on their faces, she said, "Don't look so petrified. He's doesn't appear to be angry." The girls relaxed a little. "Well, hurry up! He's waiting."
