Tina awoke again for the third time that night. She had pretty much always slept curled up by Newt's side nowadays, but tonight, something was wrong with Newt, she could tell.
Newt was trembling like a leaf in his sleep, every muscle tense. Tina reached up to stroke his cheek, but she recoiled her hand with shock when she felt his cheek. Cold as ice, hard as stone.
Suddenly, in his sleep, Newt's fingernails began to sink into her flesh, and Newt let out a scream that was full of agony. Tina wanted desperately to wake him, but his hands held her arms down. She wrestled one free, and began to shake him. "Newt?! Mercy Lewis, Newt, wake up!" Tina shouted. Newt jerked one last time before his eyes flew open and he gasped for air. He panted for a second before his eyes landed on Tina. He sat up and threw his arms around her, holding her more tightly than he ever had before. Every part of his body was cold and hard, but she could still smell his scent faintly, so she endured it. Newt's body slowly warmed up again, his cheeks softened until they were as warm and soft as she remembered. His scent took back over again, and Tina inhaled lungfuls as Newt tried to pull himself back together.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Tina asked softly, running her hand from the back of his neck to the small of his back. She felt him shake his head. "Just please don't leave," he begged, his voice cracking as he spoke. "Course not," she replied. Newt buried his face into her neck, which made her shiver just a little. She kissed his face several times gently, until he lay her back down on the bed. He hovered over her for a second before kissing her anxiously for a few minutes. This kiss was much different than the ones Tina was used to. Newt was a bit less gentle, the kiss was a bit more sloppy than usual. Finally, Newt pulled away and lay down beside her, pulling her in snugly, kissing the top of her head. He calmed down a bit, until he saw her arm. "Merlin's Beard, Tina, I must've hurt you in my sleep! I feel awful, I'm so sorry, is there anything-" "Newt, I'm an Auror. I've been through pain a lot worse. Forget me. I just heard you scream in agony in your sleep," Tina studied his face carefully as she spoke. Newt said nothing. He simply just tapped his wand on the marks on her arm and the marks, along with the pain, quickly disappeared. He apologized one last time before pulling her in snugly.
Tina remembered how Newt had comforted her when she had nightmares. "Newt, what were you dreaming about?" Tina asked. Newt said nothing. "Newt, please don't shut me out," she said. Newt sighed. "I used to have a dream that Grindewald would torture me. But I dreamed that you were the one being tortured, and there was nothing I could do to save you." Tina touched his cheek. "Newt, I will never be kidnapped and tortured. I'm right here," she said. Newt nodded, his head resting on hers. Tina relaxed a bit as well. She hummed him a lullaby that her mother used to sing to her, and Newt soon drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
