Chapter 5

"What!?" Kaya cries "We're going to die. We need to get out of here!"

"We need to find Kat!" Thomas snaps "listen carefully- Kaya,Will,Ki Hong,Dyl. Get in one of the cars,drive to that shop we went to today. Stay safe. I'll find Kat and we'll join you. This place ain't safe no more."

"No," I grab Thomas' arm "everyone else can go to the truck but I'm staying with you. I'm not letting you do this alone."

"Okay. Let's go," he says as I see Kaya's tears. I take her hands and sigh.

"Listen,you get in that truck okay?" I whisper,trying to soothe her "me,Thomas and Sonya will be as quick as we can. Kaya,listen to me- you are going to be just fine. We all are. I'll see you soon."

"See you soon," she hugs me tight "Stay safe Dylan."

"I will," I nod and run into the darkness with Thomas. That's when it dawns upon me just how horrific the situation is. The monsters are everywhere,biting and eating people. We don't see any Kat. So we sprint through,shooting down anything in our way until we've cleared the entire camp. No Kat.

"She's dead..." Thomas cries,falling down to his knees "she's dead,she's dead."

"No," I put my hand on my shoulder "she's smart. She got away. I promise. But Thomas listen to me-this place isn't safe. We have to go,I'm sorry but we have to go now. Please. She'd want you to be safe. Thomas,we need to go now." I watch as he nods,the tears streaming down his face as I help him to a nearby car. He rocks back and forth as I drive off. My heart was a protest that I let rally against my ribs,my hands clenched the steering wheel and I don't stop the car for a second. No clue where I was going-just away. I could drive forever in hope of safety. But with him I felt safe. You're never perfectly safe in this world. No human being on Earth ever is or ever was. To live now is to risk your life, your heart, everything.

"Stop the car," Thomas mumbles and I do as I'm told "look,they came."

We pull out of the car and Kaya runs to me-hugging me tight. "Thank God," she kisses my cheek "where's Kat?"

"We couldn't find her," Thomas sniffles.

"She's probably gone with Chuck. Don't you worry," Ki Hong pats his shoulder "I guess we crash here for the night then tomorrow we find the rest of the group. Thomas we are going to find your sister and she is going to be just fine. Now let's get you inside."

I help Thomas up and we sit him inside. He's still a little shocked to speak so I just lay him down and wrap him in blankets and I listen as he cries softly into them.

"Dylan," Ki Hong pulls me away behind some groceries "there are more people dead than alive in that camp. What if we were the only survivors? What happened if the creatures devoured that girl into shreds?"

"We'll find her. We have to. Me and you will go searching tomorrow morning and we won't give up until we find her safe and alive. You hear?"

"Yes. I get ya. Get some rest Dylan?"

"I will. Goodnight."

I grab myself a blanket and lay on the rough ground. I curl up and hum to myself to a few minutes until my eyes go heavy and I fall asleep.

The next day I wolfed down my breakfast "We're going to split up. Ki Hong with me,then Thomas,Kaya,Will go together. We meet back here at dark."

"Okay," Kaya sighs "we'll find her."

"Of course," I nod and pull my bag over my shoulder "stay close. Only fire your guns if you have to."

I leave with Ki Hong and we re-trace our footsteps back to camp-
"How can you be so sure she's alive?" He asks me.

"I'm not. But Thomas is the only one left with real family and I know that loosing her is a bigger threat than the monsters."

"I think people have hurt me more than these monsters ever could."

"What happened to you?"

He sighs "two years ago me and everyone on my street hid in a local community centre. But supplies were short and it was hard to get them. One day my dad went on a supply run with a few others and he was thrown into the arms of the monsters by those people- he was devoured and died in agony so those people could eat. They killed an innocent man,my dad. I wanna see them die- I know they're out there and when I find them I'm going to feed them to the monsters. So they can see how it feels. My mum died before the outbreak and I didn't have any siblings. So I took off and I found the camp. Those men who killed my father were the real monsters. These creatures have no control over themselves but people do. I do know this world is trying to die and I think we should let it."

"We can survive this," I tell him.

"What and live happily ever after!?"

"I don't know. We can find a place. There is a place for us,believe me."

"I don't believe shit. Not anymore. I don't believe Kat's alive either and deep down neither do you!"

"We have to believe,for Thomas. I'm believing for him."

Our old camp is a pile of scattered bodies,mainly monsters. We search through with no sign of Kat. I check her tent and notice all her stuff was gone.

"Dylan. Look at this!" Ki Hong calls me out to him. I see he's holding a note-
Don't worry. I'm going into the forest,I'll be back before dinner.

"This was written before the attack on camp," I mumble "we need to check every inch of the forest." I tuck the note in my back-pocket.

"Dylan,honey you need to wake up." My eyes flutter open to see my mum above me. She smiles and helps me up,rubbing my back "we need to go. This place isn't safe." Her statement is clarified when I hear a loud screech from one of the monsters in the difference. I begin to panic.

"Don't worry," my dad lifts me into his arms as he begins to run briskly away. I cry into his shoulder,clinging to him as I squeeze my eyes shut "don't worry Dylan. You're safe,it's okay. Just keep your eyes closed. Don't open them."

"Dylan? You okay man?"
Ki Hong's voice brings me back into focus. I nod "Fine,just thinking."
