"I was... Going to see Mom and Dad."
"Oh..." He backed up a bit, feeling a bit bad.
"You want to come?" She grabbed a scarf and tossed it to him. "It's a little cold out."
"Oh, um... Sure..." He put the scarf on and walked out with her. He stayed behind her and he followed her to a cemetery, filled with headstones and laced with flowers. She led him to a larger stone and sat down in front of it. She placed the flowers down and dusted off the stone.
"Some dirt got on it..." She looked at Matt, who was standing there awkwardly, not really knowing what to do. "You can sit." She patted the ground next to him and he sat, wrapping the scarf around his neck.
"I feel like I'm being disrespectful being here... Considering they were killed by sirens." He whispered, looking at her.
"It's fine. Nothing you can do to change it now."
"I know... I'm sorry." He sat in silence and she rested her head on his shoulder. "You miss them a lot... Don't you?"
"Yeah... I never got to say goodbye... They left for their last trip before I had the chance..." She stood, dusting herself off. "But hey, no use dwelling in the past." She went to walk off but Matt grabbed her shirt sleeve.
"Grace, if you're hurting, you can be open about it. You're still young, bottling this up isn't good for you."
She looked at him and tugged away her sleeve. "I'm alright. Thank you, though." She walked out and Matt was left alone at the headstone.
She walked home and stepped inside. She went to her room, shut the door, and sat on her bed, shaking. She hugged her pillow and started crying. She heard the door click open and Edd walked in.
"Grace..?"
She clutched the pillow, not looking at him. "I miss them... I miss mom and dad, I want them back..." Edd ran over and hugged her. "I want mom back, I want dad back, I want things to be how they were before."
"I know, I do, too... We can't change it, though..." He rubbed her back as she sobbed into his shoulder. "Take some deep breaths."
She eventually calmed down, but still held onto Edd. She was silent, and Edd stood up. "Love you, kid."
"Love you, too, Edd." Edd walked out and saw Matt walk into the house.
"Where were you?"
"Oh... Grace went to visit your parents and she let me come with her..." He took off the scarf and hung it up. "Is she okay?"
"She's having a hard time... But it's to be expected." He sighed, rubbing his face to wake himself up. "It's tough seeing her in pain... But we can't do anything to change what happened. Best thing we can do for her is support her and help her through it."
"I wish I could do something to help..." He lifted the laundry basket and grabbed the soap from the top of the mantle.
"You have."
"What do you mean..?" He looked over, stopping in his tracks.
"You've... given me a shoulder to cry on. It's hard to be supportive of someone when you don't have someone to support you, but you've been there for me when I didn't have anyone else."
Matt was about to say something when Edd walked over and gave him a quick kiss. "Thank you for helping me."
Matt grew flustered and gathered everything together. "I'm going to go do the laundry." He put it in a large bag.
"I'm coming with you! I need to get out of the house and go grocery shopping anyways." He grabbed a smaller bag and walked out, pulling Matt with him. He started walking down the sidewalk and Matt followed close behind, seeing some people stare at him. He quickly covered his scales and Edd looked back.
"They're staring..." Matt whispered, and Edd took off his coat. He put it on Matt, covering the scales. Matt smiled and Edd walked into a small store.
"I just need to grab a few things." Edd wandered around the store, picking a few things up as he went, before he perked up and grabbed Matt's sleeve. "Come on! I've got someone I want you to meet!" He pulled Matt along to a random area of the store. He let go as he ran towards and threw himself onto a random man ahead of him. The man shrieked and fell over.
"Edd!" Mat ran over to him. "What on Earth are you doing?!" He saw that they were both laughing and grew confused. The two stood and Edd was ecstatic.
"Matt, this is Tom! He's one of my closest friends! He used to sail with me!" Edd smiled and turned to Tom. "Tom, this is Matt! He's my..." He was silent, his cheeks turning pink. "Uh..."
"I'm his boyfriend."
Tom seemed a bit shocked and looked at Edd. "How'd you snag him?"
"Saved my life."
"Really? Wow." Tom crossed his arms, looking at Matt. "So, why'd you settle for this little shrimp?" He gestured towards Edd.
"Who says I was looking for anything better?" He ruffled Edd's hair.
"You're too nice." Edd looked over at Tom, upset. "And I'm not a shrimp."
"Whatever you say." Tom saw Matt wearing Edd's coat over his shoulders and Matt quickly covered his outer wrist, nearly dropping the bag with the laundry in it. Tom reached for his arm and Matt stepped back a bit.
"Tom, what are you doing?"
"He's hiding something." He tugged at Matt's sleeve, making him back up further.
"Tom, it's none of your business."
"It's completely my business, Edd. If you're in a relationship with someone I want to know I can trust them too." He reached out a final time when Edd stepped between them.
"I trust him. There's nothing to worry about."
"Fine." He pulled back, looking at the marks on Matt's neck. Unlike the scales, they didn't disappear around people he doesn't trust. "How'd you get those?"
"Oh... I got attacked in an alley once..."
"And you didn't bleed out? Those look like pretty clean and deep cuts."
"Got to a doctor."
"With four cuts on your neck? Doubt it."
"Look, I don't want to talk about it, okay?" Matt snapped a bit, quite upset. His eyes were red, and he gripped the bag, walking off. "I'll meet up with you later, Edd." He left the store, and Tom was quite shocked.
"H-His... His eyes..." He looked at Edd, extremely confused.
"Ugh... I really shouldn't be the one to tell you this..." Edd looked down the aisle to make sure nobody was around. "He's a siren."
"What?!"
"Shh!" Edd covered his mouth, checking for people. He removed his hand from Tom's mouth.
"H-He's a siren?! Edd, he's going to kill you!"
"Matt's not like that. He's got some problems, but he's working on them."
"I knew I had a reason not to trust him. He's probably brainwashed you or something!" He left his bag on the ground, storming off.
"Where are you going?!"
"To deal with him myself." He slammed the door to the store, knocking the bell off of the wall.
